Dear wife last midnight whilst I readA
The tomes you so despiseB
A spectre rose beside the bedA
And spake in this true wiseB
'From Canaan's beatific coastC
I 've come to visit theeD
For I am Frognall Dibdin's ghost 'E
Says Dibdin's ghost to meD
-
I bade him welcome and we twainF
Discussed with buoyant heartsG
The various things that appertainF
To bibliomaniac artsG
'Since you are fresh from t' other sideH
Pray tell me of that hostC
That treasured books before they died '-
Says I to Dibdin's ghostC
-
'They 've entered into perfect restI
For in the life they 've wonF
There are no auctions to molestI
No creditors to dunF
Their heavenly rapture has no boundsJ
Beside that jasper seaD
It is a joy unknown to Lowndes '-
Says Dibdin's ghost to meD
-
Much I rejoiced to hear him speakK
Of biblio bliss aboveL
For I am one of those who seekK
What bibliomaniacs loveL
'But tell me for I long to hearM
What doth concern me mostC
Are wives admitted to that sphere '-
Says I to Dibdin's ghostC
-
'The women folk are few up thereN
For 't were not fair you knowF
That they our heavenly joy should shareN
Who vex us here belowF
The few are those who have been kindO
To husbands such as weD
They knew our fads and did n't mind '-
Says Dibdin's ghost to meD
-
'But what of those who scold at usP
When we would read in bedA
Or wanting victuals make a fussP
If we buy books insteadA
And what of those who 've dusted notQ
Our motley pride and boastC
Shall they profane that sacred spot '-
Says I to Dibdin's ghostC
-
'Oh no they tread that other pathR
Which leads where torments rollS
And worms yes bookworms vent their wrathR
Upon the guilty soulS
Untouched of bibliomaniac graceT
That saveth such as weD
They wallow in that dreadful place '-
Says Dibdin's ghost to meD
-
'To my dear wife will I reciteU
What things I 've heard you sayV
She 'll let me read the books by nightU
She 's let me buy by dayV
For we together by and byW
Would join that heavenly hostC
She 's earned a rest as well as I '-
Says I to Dibdin's ghostC
