Contentment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCCC DEDFCCCC

Happy the man that when his day is doneA
Lies down to sleep with nothing of regretB
The battle he has fought may not be wonA
The fame he sought be just as fleeting yetB
Folding at last his hands upon his breastC
Happy is he if hoary and forespentC
He sinks into the last eternal restC
Breathing these only works I am contentC
-
But happier he that while his blood is warmD
See hopes and friendships dead about him lieE
Bares his brave breast to envy's bitter stormD
Nor shuns the poison barbs of calumnyF
And 'mid it all stands sturdy and elateC
Girt only in the armor God hath meantC
For him who 'neath the buffetings of fateC
Can say to God and man I am contentC
