Contentment Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCCC DEDFCCCC| Happy the man that when his day is done | A |
| Lies down to sleep with nothing of regret | B |
| The battle he has fought may not be won | A |
| The fame he sought be just as fleeting yet | B |
| Folding at last his hands upon his breast | C |
| Happy is he if hoary and forespent | C |
| He sinks into the last eternal rest | C |
| Breathing these only works I am content | C |
| - | |
| But happier he that while his blood is warm | D |
| See hopes and friendships dead about him lie | E |
| Bares his brave breast to envy's bitter storm | D |
| Nor shuns the poison barbs of calumny | F |
| And 'mid it all stands sturdy and elate | C |
| Girt only in the armor God hath meant | C |
| For him who 'neath the buffetings of fate | C |
| Can say to God and man I am content | C |
