The angel host that sped last nightA
Bearing the wondrous news afarB
Came in their ever glorious flightA
Unto a slumbering little starB
-
'Awake and sing O star ' they criedC
'Awake and glorify the mornD
Herald the tidings far and wideC
He that shall lead His flock is born '-
-
The little star awoke and sungE
As only stars in rapture mayF
And presently where church bells hungE
The joyous tidings found their wayF
-
'Awake O bells 't is Christmas mornD
Awake and let thy music tellG
To all mankind that now is bornD
What Shepherd loves His lambkins well '-
-
Then rang the bells as fled the nightA
O'er dreaming land and drowsing deepH
And coming with the morning lightA
They called my child to you asleepH
-
Sweetly and tenderly they spokeI
And lingering round your little bedJ
Their music pleaded till you wokeI
And this is what their music saidJ
-
'Awake and sing 'tis Christmas mornD
Whereon all earth salutes her KingK
In Bethlehem is the Shepherd bornD
Awake O little lamb and sing '-
-
So dear my child kneel at my feetL
And with those voices from aboveM
Share thou this holy time with meN
The universal hymn of loveM
