As I was going to Bethlehem townA
Upon the earth I cast me downA
All underneath a little treeB
That whispered in this wise to meB
'Oh I shall stand on CalvaryB
And bear what burthen saveth thee 'C
-
As up I fared to Bethlehem townA
I met a shepherd coming downA
And thus he quoth 'A wondrous sightD
Hath spread before mine eyes this nightD
An angel host most fair to seeB
That sung full sweetly of a treeB
That shall uplift on CalvaryB
What burthen saveth you and me '-
-
And as I gat to Bethlehem townA
Lo wise men came that bore a crownA
'Is there ' cried I 'in BethlehemE
A King shall wear this diadem '-
'Good sooth ' they quoth 'and it is HeB
That shall be lifted on the treeB
And freely shed on CalvaryB
What blood redeemeth us and thee '-
-
Unto a Child in Bethlehem townA
The wise men came and brought the crownA
And while the infant smiling sleptF
Upon their knees they fell and weptF
But with her babe upon her kneeB
Naught recked that Mother of the treeB
That should uplift on CalvaryB
What burthen saveth all and meB
-
Again I walk in Bethlehem townA
And think on Him that wears the crownA
I may not kiss His feet againG
Nor worship Him as did I thenG
My King hath died upon the treeB
And hath outpoured on CalvaryB
What blood redeemeth you and meB
