At The Ball Game Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF GGHH IIJJ KKLM NNOO PPQQ

What gods or heroes whose brave deeds none can disputeA
Will you record O Clio on the harp and fluteA
What lofty names shall sportive Echo grant a placeB
On Pindus' crown or Helicon's cool shadowy spaceB
-
Sing not my Orpheus sweeping oft the tuneful stringsC
Of gliding streams and nimble winds and such poor thingsC
But lend your measures to a theme of noble thoughtD
And crown with laurel these great heroes as you oughtD
-
Now steps Ryanus forth at call of furious MarsE
And from his oaken staff the sphere speeds to the starsE
And now he gains the tertiary goal and turnsF
While whiskered balls play round the timid staff of BurnsF
-
Lo from the tribunes on the bleachers comes a shoutG
Beseeching bold Ansonius to line 'em outG
And as Apollo's flying chariot cleaves the skyH
So stanch Ansonius lifts the frightened ball on highH
-
Like roar of ocean beating on the Cretan cliffI
The strong Komiske gives the panting sphere a biffI
And from the tribunes rise loud murmurs everywhereJ
When twice and thrice Mikellius beats the mocking airJ
-
And as Achilles' fleet the Trojan waters sweepsK
So horror sways the throng Pfefferius sleepsK
And stalwart Konnor though by Mercury inspiredL
The Equus Carolus defies and is retiredM
-
So waxes fierce the strife between these godlike menN
And as the hero's fame grows by Virgilian penN
So let Clarksonius Maximus be raised to heightsO
As far above the moon as moon o'er lesser lightsO
-
But as for me the ivy leaf is my rewardP
If you a place among the lyric bards accordP
With crest exalted and O People with delightQ
I'll proudly strike the stars and so be out of sightQ
