A king there was onceA
Who lorded it over his peopleB
And made his wishC
The people's commandD
-
Their rights he trampledE
Upon and made it a decreeF
That none opposed himG
In any way or anywhere the peopleB
He made fauning slavesH
That fed from his hand like pigeonsI
In their own land and brookedE
All opposition to his royaltyE
-
Some he sent to graves untimelyE
Others he made to rot in the dungeonJ
Some others wore heavy iron chainsK
He put on their feet like banglesL
For none to raise dissenting voicesM
He put gags on their mouthsN
-
Till one fateful dayE
The king had to address visitorsO
And his people in pomp and pageantryE
Not knowing he had excretaE
On his royal robes and none could tellP
Him though all was aware of the ignominyE
He was the all knowing supreme kingQ
And none dared to correct His MajestyE
-
And so the king went aboutE
In ignominy a thing of mockeryE
Before the very people he claimed to dominateE
Just because the king was above everyone elseR
And knew everythingQ
And none could correct himG
Because he was the all knowing supreme kingQ

Poet's note: "Season of Madness" and "Wisdom and Power" inspired this poem which is a fictional story of a king in Igbo mythology who believed he he knew everything there was to know and needed nobody's advice. However, the king went to a public ceremony without realizing he has excreta on his robe. His people saw it but could not tell him because he claimed to know everything. The decampee Governor is that king because he assumed to know everything and didn't consult his people before jumping boat. He expected the people to move with him but most of them prefer to stay where they are.
