Boy saw his dadA
Lying in a boxB
Like he was wontC
To lie in bedD
When he had his siestaD
Only that this timeE
Dad sleptD
In his best suitD
Wore his golden tieD
With his Italian shoesF
And his glasses onG
-
His mother criedD
Her eyes outD
As women all dressed in blackH
Held her and said incomprehensible wordsI
He watchedD
As they lowered the boxB
Deep into the earthJ
He was thereK
He saw it all happenL
-
And his motherM
She criedD
As if her heart would jumpN
Out of her mouth as the womenL
Held her back from fallingO
Into the gaping earthJ
They too criedD
As they took her back into the houseP
-
Boy slippedD
Out of an aunt's gripQ
Headed for the houseP
He remembered somethingO
And a question was burningO
In his small headD
He sat beside herM
Held her hand in his small handsR
Looking into her faceS
-
Mum he calledD
Yes dear she answeredD
Dad planted yam in the earthJ
And it germinatedD
Yes dear she answered wonderingO
When will dad germinateD
She shook her head with pityD
Looked down into his small faceS
With tears in her eyesT
And smiled despite her painU
Dad she saidD
Will never germinateD
Dad is goneV
And never would returnW
And the tearsX
Came down in torrentsY

Poet's note: The poem continues my reflection on death as we have in the poem, "Funeral Poster." It's an imaginary story of a little boy who watched his father's burial and assumed it was like planting crops which would germinate later. In the poem I look at the condition of little children who lose parents at an early age.
