Boy saw his dad	A
Lying in a box	B
Like he was wont	C
To lie in bed	D
When he had his siesta	D
Only that this time	E
Dad slept	D
In his best suit	D
Wore his golden tie	D
With his Italian shoes	F
And his glasses on	G

His mother cried	D
Her eyes out	D
As women all dressed in black	H
Held her and said incomprehensible words	I
He watched	D
As they lowered the box	B
Deep into the earth	J
He was there	K
He saw it all happen	L

And his mother	M
She cried	D
As if her heart would jump	N
Out of her mouth as the women	L
Held her back from falling	O
Into the gaping earth	J
They too cried	D
As they took her back into the house	P

Boy slipped	D
Out of an aunt's grip	Q
Headed for the house	P
He remembered something	O
And a question was burning	O
In his small head	D
He sat beside her	M
Held her hand in his small hands	R
Looking into her face	S

Mum he called	D
Yes dear she answered	D
Dad planted yam in the earth	J
And it germinated	D
Yes dear she answered wondering	O
When will dad germinate	D
She shook her head with pity	D
Looked down into his small face	S
With tears in her eyes	T
And smiled despite her pain	U
Dad she said	D
Will never germinate	D
Dad is gone	V
And never would return	W
And the tears	X
Came down in torrents	Y
