Blue in the west the mountain standsA
And through the long twilightB
Vickery sits with folded handsA
And Vickery s eyes are brightB
-
Bright for he knows what no man elseC
On earth as yet may knowD
There s a golden word that he never tellsE
And a gift that he will not showD
-
He dreams of honor and wealth and fameF
He smiles and well he mayG
For to Vickery once a sick man cameF
Who did not go awayG
-
The day before the day to beH
Vickery said the guestI
You know as you live what s left of meH
And you shall know the restI
-
You know as you live that I have comeJ
To this we call the endK
No doubt you have found me troublesomeJ
But you ve also found a friendK
-
For we shall give and you shall takeL
The gold that is in viewM
The mountain there and I shall makeL
A golden man of youM
-
And you shall leave a friend behindN
Who neither frets nor feelsO
And you shall move among your kindN
With hundreds at your heelsO
-
Now this that I have written hereP
Tells all that need be toldQ
So Vickery take the way that s clearR
And be a man of goldQ
-
Vickery turned his eyes againS
To the far mountain sideT
And wept a tear for worthy menS
Defeated and defiedT
-
Since then a crafty score of yearsU
Have come and they have goneV
But Vickery counts no lost arrearsU
He lingers and lives onW
-
Blue in the west the mountain standsA
Familiar as a faceX
Blue but Vickery knows what sandsA
Are golden at its baseX
-
He dreams and lives upon the dayG
When he shall walk with kingsY
Vickery smiles and well he mayG
The life caged linnet singsY
-
Vickery thinks the time will comeJ
To go for what is hisZ
But hovering unseen hands at homeA2
Will hold him where he isZ
-
There s a golden word that he never tellsE
And a gift that he will not showD
All to be given to some one elseC
And Vickery not to knowD
