Theophilus Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAAA ABAB CDED AFAF GAGA

By what serene malevolence of namesA
Had you the gift of yours TheophilusA
Not even a smeared young Cyclops at his gamesA
Would have you long and you are one of usA
-
Told of your deeds I shudder for your dreamsA
And they no doubt are few and innocentB
Meanwhile I marvel for in you it seemsA
Heredity outshines environmentB
-
What lingering bit of Belial unforeseenC
Survives and amplifies itself in youD
What manner of devilry has ever beenE
That your obliquity may never doD
-
Humility befits a father's eyesA
But not a friend of us would have him weepF
Admiring everything that lives and diesA
Theophilus we like you best asleepF
-
Sleep sleep and let us find another manG
To lend another name less hazardousA
Caligula maybe or CalibanG
Or Cain but surely not TheophilusA
