The Old King's New Jester Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFDF DGHGCCICI JKLKAAMAM ANONPPQPR

You that in vain would front the coming orderA
With eyes that meet forlornly what they mustB
And only with a furtive recognitionC
See dust where there is dustB
Be sure you like it always in your facesD
Obscuring your best gracesE
Blinding your speech and sightF
Before you seek again your dusty placesD
Where the old wrong seems rightF
-
Longer ago than cave men had their changesD
Our fathers may have slain a son or twoG
Discouraging a further dialecticH
Regarding what was newG
And after their unstudied admonitionC
Occasional contritionC
For their old fashioned waysI
May have reduced their doubts and in additionC
Softened their final daysI
-
Farther away than feet shall ever travelJ
Are the vague towers of our unbuilded StateK
But there are mightier things than we to lead usL
That will not let us waitK
And we go on with none to tell us whetherA
Or not we've each a tetherA
Determining how fast or far we goM
And it is well since we must go togetherA
That we are not to knowM
-
If the old wrong and all its injured glamourA
Haunts you by day and gives your night no peaceN
You may as well agreeably and serenelyO
Give the new wrong its leaseN
For should you nourish a too fervid yearningP
For what is not returningP
The vicious and unfused ingredientQ
May give you qualms and one or two concerningP
The last of your contentR
