For those that never know the lightA
The darkness is a sullen thingB
And they the Children of the NightA
Seem lost in Fortune's winnowingB
-
But some are strong and some are weakC
And there's the story House and homeD
Are shut from countless hearts that seekC
World refuge that will never comeE
-
And if there be no other lifeF
And if there be no other chanceG
To weigh their sorrow and their strifeF
Than in the scales of circumstanceG
-
'T were better ere the sun go downH
Upon the first day we embarkI
In life's imbittered sea to drownH
Than sail forever in the darkI
-
But if there be a soul on earthJ
So blinded with its own misuseK
Of man's revealed incessant worthJ
Or worn with anguish that it viewsK
-
No light but for a mortal eyeL
No rest but of a mortal sleepM
No God but in a prophet's lieL
No faith for honest doubt to keepM
-
If there be nothing good or badN
But chaos for a soul to trustO
God counts it for a soul gone madN
And if God be God He is justO
-
And if God be God He is LoveP
And though the Dawn be still so dimQ
It shows us we have played enoughR
With creeds that make a fiend of HimQ
-
There is one creed and only oneS
That glorifies God's excellenceT
So cherish that His will be doneS
The common creed of common senseU
-
It is the crimson not the grayV
That charms the twilight of all timeW
It is the promise of the dayV
That makes the starry sky sublimeW
-
It is the faith within the fearX
That holds us to the life we curseY
So let us in ourselves revereX
The Self which is the UniverseY
-
Let us the Children of the NightA
Put off the cloak that hides the scarZ
Let us be Children of the LightA
And tell the ages what we areZ
