Though not for common praise of himA
Nor yet for pride or charityB
Still would I make to VanderbergC
One tribute for his memoryB
-
One honest warrant of a friendD
Who found with him that flesh was grassE
Who neither blamed him in defectF
Nor marveled how it came to passE
-
Or why it ever was that heB
That Vanderberg of all good menG
Should lose himself to find himselfH
Straightway to lose himself againG
-
For we had buried Sainte NitoucheI
And he had said to me that nightJ
Yes we have laid her in the earthK
But what of that And he was rightJ
-
And he had said We have a wifeL
We have a child we have a churchI
'T would be a scurrilous way outM
If we should leave them in the lurchI
-
That's why I have you here with meB
To night you know a talk may takeN
The place of bromide cyanideO
Et cetera For heaven's sakeN
-
Why do you look at me like thatP
What have I done to freeze you soQ
Dear man you see where friendship meansR
A few things yet that you don't knowQ
-
And you see partly why it isS
That I am glad for what is goneT
For Sainte Nitouche and for the worldU
In me that followed What lives onV
-
Well here you have it here at homeW
For even home will yet returnX
You know the truth is on my sideO
And that will make the embers burnX
-
I see them brighten while I speakY
I see them flash and they are mineZ
You do not know them but I doA2
I know the way they used to shineZ
-
And I know more than I have toldB2
Of other life that is to beB
I shall have earned it when it comesC2
And when it comes I shall be freeB
-
Not as I was before she cameD2
But farther on for having beenE2
The servitor the slave of herF2
The fool you think But there's your sinE2
-
Forgive me and your ignoranceG2
Could you but have the vision hereH2
That I have you would understandI2
As I do that all ways are clearJ2
-
For those who dare to follow themK2
With earnest eyes and honest feetL2
But Sainte Nitouche has made the wayM2
For me and I shall find it sweetL2
-
Sweet with a bitter sting left YesN2
Bitter enough God knows at firstO2
But there are more steep ways than oneP2
To make the best look like the worstO2
-
And here is mine the dark and hardQ2
For me to follow trust and holdB2
And worship so that I may leaveR2
No broken story to be toldB2
-
Therefore I welcome what may comeS2
Glad for the days the nights the yearsT2
An upward flash of ember flameD2
Revealed the gladness in his tearsU2
-
You see them but you know said heB
Too much to be incredulousV2
You know the day that makes us wiseW2
The moment that makes fools of usV2
-
So I shall follow from now onV
The road that she has found for meB
The dark and starry way that leadsX2
Right upward and eternallyB
-
Stumble at first I may do thatP
And I may grope and hate the nightJ
But there's a guidance for the manY2
Who stumbles upward for the lightJ
-
And I shall have it all from herF2
The foam born child of innocenceG2
I feel you smiling while I speakY
But that's of little consequenceG2
-
For when we learn that we may findZ2
The truth where others miss the markA3
What is it worth for us to knowQ
That friends are smiling in the darkA3
-
Could we but share the lonely prideO
Of knowing all would then be wellB3
But knowledge often writes itselfH
In flaming words we cannot spellB3
-
And I who have my work to doA2
Look forward and I dare to seeB
Far stretching and all mountainousV2
God's pathway through the gloom for meB
-
I found so little to say thenG
That I said nothing Say good nightJ
Said Vanderberg and when we meetL2
To morrow tell me I was rightJ
-
Forget the dozen other thingsC3
That you have not the faith to sayM2
For now I know as well as youA2
That you are glad to go awayM2
-
I could have blessed the man for thatP
And he could read me with a smileD3
You doubt said he but if we liveE3
You'll know me in a little whileD3
-
He lived and all as he foretoldB2
I knew him better than he thoughtF3
My fancy did not wholly digG3
The pit where I believed him caughtH3
-
But yet he lived and laughed and preachedI3
And worked as only players canY2
He scoured the shrine that once was homeW
And kept himself a clergymanP2
-
The clockwork of his cold routineJ3
Put friends far off that once were nearJ2
The five staccatos in his laughK3
Were too defensive and too clearJ2
-
The glacial sermons that he preachedI3
Were longer than they should have beenE2
And like the man who fashioned themK2
The best were too divinely thinE2
-
But still he lived and moved and hadL3
The sort of being that was hisS
Till on a day the shrine of homeW
For him was in the MysteriesM3
-
My friend there's one thing yet said heB
And one that I have never sharedN3
With any man that I have metO3
But you you know me And he staredN3
-
For a slow moment at me thenG
With conscious eyes that had the gleamP3
The shine before the stroke You knowQ
The ways of us the way we dreamP3
-
You know the glory we have wonP2
You know the glamour we have lostQ3
You see me now you look at meB
And yes you pity me almostR3
-
But never mind the pity noQ
Confess the faith you can't concealS3
And if you frown be not like oneP2
Of those who frown before they feelS3
-
For there is truth and half truth yesN2
And there's a quarter truth no doubtM
But mine was more than half You smileD3
You understand You bear me outM
-
You always knew that I was rightJ
You are my friend and I have triedO
Your faith your love The gleam grew smallT3
The stroke was easy and he diedO
-
I saw the dim look change itselfH
To one that never will be dimA
I saw the dead flesh to the graveU3
But that was not the last of himA
-
For what was his to live lives yetO3
Truth quarter truth death cannot reachI
Nor is it always what we knowQ
That we are fittest here to teachI
-
The fight goes on when fields are stillV3
The triumph clings when arms are downW3
The jewels of all coronetsX3
Are pebbles of the unseen crownW3
-
The specious weight of loud reproofU3
Sinks where a still conviction floatsY3
And on God's ocean after stormZ3
Time's wreckage is half pilot boatsY3
-
And what wet faces wash to sightJ
Thereafter feed the common moanA4
But Vanderberg no pilot hadL3
Nor could have he was all aloneA4
-
Unchallenged by the larger lightJ
The starry quest was his to makeN
And of all ways that are for menG
The starry way was his to takeN
-
We grant him idle names enoughU3
To day but even while we frownW3
The fight goes on the triumph clingsC3
And there is yet the unseen crownW3
-
But was it his Did VanderbergC
Find half truth to be passion's thrallT3
Or as we met him day by dayM2
Was love triumphant after allT3
-
I do not know so much as thatP
I only know that he died rightJ
Saint Anthony nor Sainte NitoucheI
Had ever smiled as he did quiteJ
