| Whereat we smile because we are as yet | A |
| The last though not the last who may forget | A |
| What cleavings and abrasions manifold | B |
| Have marked an armor that was never scrolled | B |
| Before for human glory and regret | B |

| With infinite unseen enemies in the way | C |
| We have encountered the intangible | D |
| To vanquish where our fathers who fought well | E |
| Scarce had assumed endurance for a day | C |
| Yet we shall have our darkness even as they | C |
