No Mary there was nothing not a wordA
Nothing and always nothing Go againB
Yourself and he may listen or at leastC
Look up at you and let you see his eyesD
I might as well have been the sound of rainE
A wind among the cedars or a birdA
Or nothing Mary make him look at youF
And even if he should say that we are nothingG
To know that you have heard him will be somethingG
And yet he loved us and it was for loveH
The Master gave him back Why did He waitI
So long before He came Why did He weepJ
I thought He would be glad and LazarusK
To see us all again as He had left usK
All as it was all as it was beforeL
-
Mary who felt her sister's frightened armsM
Like those of someone drowning who had seized herN
Fearing at last they were to fail and sinkO
Together in this fog stricken sea of strangenessK
Fought sadly with bereaved indignant eyesD
To find again the fading shores of homeP
That she had seen but now could see no longerN
Now she could only gaze into the twilightQ
And in the dimness know that he was thereR
Like someone that was not He who had beenS
Their brother and was dead now seemed aliveT
Only in death again or worse than deathU
For tombs at least always until todayV
Though sad were certain There was nothing certainW
For man or God in such a day as thisX
For there they were alone and there was heY
Alone and somewhere out of BethanyY
The Master who had come to them so lateI
Only for love of them and then so slowlyY
And was for their sake hunted now by menB
Who feared Him as they feared no other preyV
For the world's sake was hidden Better the tombZ
For Lazarus than life if this be lifeA2
She thought and then to Martha No my dearB2
She said aloud not as it was beforeL
Nothing is ever as it was beforeL
Where Time has been Here there is more than TimeC2
And we that are so lonely and so farD2
From home since he is with us here againB
Are farther now from him and from ourselvesE2
Than we are from the stars He will not speakF2
Until the spirit that is in him speaksG2
And we must wait for all we are to knowH2
Or even to learn that we are not to knowH2
Martha we are too near to this for knowledgeI2
And that is why it is that we must waitI
Our friends are coming if we call for themJ2
And there are covers we'll put over himK2
To make him warmer We are too young perhapsL2
To say that we know better what is bestM2
Than he We do not know how old he isN2
If you remember what the Master saidO2
Try to believe that we need have no fearB2
Let me the selfish and the careless oneW
Be housewife and a mother for tonightQ
For I am not so fearful as you areD2
And I was not so eagerN
-
Martha sankP2
Down at her sister's feet and there sat watchingG
A flower that had a small familiar nameQ2
That was as old as memory but was notR2
The name of what she saw now in its briefS2
And infinite mystery that so frightened herN
That life became a terror Tears againB
Flooded her eyes and overflowed No MaryY
She murmured slowly hating her own wordsT2
Before she heard them you are not so eagerN
To see our brother as we see him nowU2
Neither is He who gave him back to usK
I was to be the simple one as alwaysV2
And this was all for me She stared againB
Over among the trees where LazarusK
Who seemed to be a man who was not thereR
Might have been one more shadow among shadowsW2
If she had not remembered Then she feltX2
The cool calm hands of Mary on her faceY2
And shivered wondering if such hands were realZ2
-
The Master loved you as He loved us allA3
Martha and you are saying only thingsB3
That children say when they have had no sleepJ
Try somehow now to rest a little whileC3
You know that I am here and that our friendsD3
Are coming if I callA3
-
Martha at lastE3
Arose and went with Mary to the doorL
Where they stood looking off at the same placeY2
And at the same shape that was always thereR
As if it would not ever move or speakF2
And always would be there Mary go nowU2
Before the dark that will be coming hides himK2
I am afraid of him out there aloneF3
Unless I see him and I have forgottenW
What sleep is Go now make him look at youF
And I shall hear him if he stirs or whispersG3
Go or I'll scream and bring all BethanyY
To come and make him speak Make him say onceH3
That he is glad and God may say the restM2
Though He say I shall sleep and sleep for everN
I shall not care for that GoH2
-
Mary movingG
Almost as if an angry child had pushed herN
Went forward a few steps and having waitedI3
As long as Martha's eyes would look at hersG3
Went forward a few more and a few moreL
And so until she came to LazarusK
Who crouched with his face hidden in his handsJ3
Like one that had no face Before she spokeK3
Feeling her sister's eyes that were behind herN
As if the door where Martha stood were nowU2
As far from her as Egypt Mary turnedL3
Once more to see that she was there Then softlyY
Fearing him not so much as wonderingG
What his first word might be said LazarusK
Forgive us if we seemed afraid of youF
And having spoken pitied her poor speechM3
That had so little seeming gladness in itN3
So little comfort and so little loveH
-
There was no sign from him that he had heardA
Or that he knew that she was there or caredO3
Whether she spoke to him again or diedP3
There at his feet We love you LazarusK
And we are not afraid The Master saidO2
We need not be afraid Will you not sayV
To me that you are glad Look LazarusK
Look at my face and see me This is MaryY
-
She found his hands and held them They were coolQ3
Like hers but they were not so calm as hersG3
Through the white robes in which his friends had wrapped himK2
When he had groped out of that awful sleepJ
She felt him trembling and she was afraidR3
At last he sighed and she prayed hungrilyY
To God that she might have again the voiceS3
Of Lazarus whose hands were giving her nowU2
The recognition of a living pressureN
That was almost a language When he spokeK3
Only one word that she had waited forL
Came from his lips and that word was her nameQ2
-
I heard them saying Mary that He weptT3
Before I woke The words were low and shakenW
Yet Mary knew that he who uttered themJ2
Was Lazarus and that would be enoughU3
Until there should be more Who made Him comeV3
That He should weep for me Was it you MaryY
The questions held in his incredulous eyesD
Were more than she would see She looked awayV
But she had felt them and should feel for everN
She thought their cold and lonely desperationW
That had the bitterness of all cold thingsB3
That were not cruel I should have wept he saidO2
If I had been the MasterN
-
Now she could feelZ2
His hands above her hair the same black hairR
That once he made a jest of praising itN3
While Martha's busy eyes had left their workW3
To flash with laughing envy Nothing of thatX3
Was to be theirs again and such a thoughtY3
Was like the flying by of a quick birdA
Seen through a shadowy doorway in the twilightQ
For now she felt his hands upon her headO2
Like weights of kindness I forgive you MaryY
You did not know Martha could not have knownF3
Only the Master knew Where is He nowU2
Yes I remember They came after HimK2
May the good God forgive Him I forgive HimK2
I must and I may know only from HimK2
The burden of all this Martha was hereZ3
But I was not yet here She was afraidR3
Why did He do it Mary Was it youF
Was it for you Where are the friends I sawA4
Yes I remember They all went awayV
I made them go away Where is He nowU2
What do I see down there Do I see MarthaB4
Down by the door I must have time for thisX
-
Lazarus looked about him fearfullyZ2
And then again at Mary who discoveredA
Awakening apprehension in his eyesD
And shivered at his feet All she had fearedC4
Was here and only in the slow reproachD4
Of his forgiveness lived his gratitudeE4
Why had he asked if it was all for herN
That he was here And what had Martha meantF4
Why had the Master waited What was comingG
To Lazarus and to them that had not comeV3
What had the Master seen before He cameQ2
That He had come so lateI
-
Where is He MaryY
Lazarus asked again Where did He goH2
Once more he gazed about him and once moreL
At Mary for an answer Have they found HimK2
Or did He go away because He wishedG4
Never to look into my eyes againB
That I could understand Where is He MaryY
-
I do not know she said Yet in my heartH4
I know that He is living as you are livingG
Living and here He is not far from usK
He will come back to us and find us allZ2
Lazarus Martha Mary everythingG
All as it was before Martha said thatX3
And He said we were not to be afraidR3
Lazarus closed his eyes while on his faceY2
A tortured adumbration of a smileZ2
Flickered an instant All as it was beforeL
He murmured wearily Martha said thatX3
And He said you were not to be afraidR3
Not you Not you Why should you be afraidR3
Give all your little fears and Martha's with themJ2
To me and I will add them unto mineI4
Like a few rain drops to GennesaretR3
-
If you had frightened me in other waysV2
Not willing it Mary said I should have knownF3
You still for Lazarus But who is thisX
Tell me again that you are LazarusK
And tell me if the Master gave to youF
No sign of a new joy that shall be comingG
To this house that He loved Are you afraidR3
Are you afraid who have felt everythingG
And seenJ4
-
But Lazarus only shook his headR3
Staring with his bewildered shining eyesD
Hard into Mary's face I do not knowH2
Mary he said after a long timeC2
When I came back I knew the Master's eyesD
Were looking into mine I looked at HisN2
And there was more in them than I could seeY
At first I could see nothing but His eyesD
Nothing else anywhere was to be seenJ4
Only His eyes And they looked into mineI4
Long into mine Mary as if He knewF
-
Mary began to be afraid of wordsT2
As she had never been afraid beforeL
Of loneliness or darkness or of deathU
But now she must have more of them or dieR3
He cannot know that there is worse than deathU
She said And youF
-
Yes there is worse than deathU
Said Lazarus and that was what He knewF
And that is what it was that I could seeY
This morning in his eyes I was afraidR3
But not as you are There is worse than deathU
Mary and there is nothing that is goodR3
For you in dying while you are still hereZ3
Mary never go back to that againB
You would not hear me if I told you moreL
For I should say it only in a languageI2
That you are not to learn by going backK4
To be a child again is to go forwardR3
And that is much to know Many grow oldR3
And fade and go away not knowing how muchL4
That is to know Mary the night is comingG
And there will soon be darkness all around youF
Let us go down where Martha waits for usK
And let there be light shining in this houseM4
-
He rose but Mary would not let him goH2
Martha when she came back from here said onlyY
That she heard nothing And have you no moreL
For Mary now than you had then for MarthaB4
Is Nothing Lazarus all you have for meY
Was Nothing all you found where you have beenS
If that be so what is there worse than thatR3
Or better if that be so And why should youF
With even our love go the same dark road overN
-
I could not answer that if that were soH2
Said Lazarus not even if I were GodR3
Why should He care whether I came or stayedR3
If that were so Why should the Master weepJ
For me or for the world or save HimselfN4
Longer for nothing And if that were soH2
Why should a few years' more mortalityY
Make Him a fugitive where flight were needlessK
Had He but held his peace and given his nodR3
To an old Law that would be new as anyY
I cannot say the answer to all thatR3
Though I may say that He is not afraidR3
And that it is not for the joy there isN2
In serving an eternal IgnoranceH3
Of our futility that He is hereZ3
Is that what you and Martha mean by NothingG
Is that what you are fearing If that be soH2
There are more weeds than lentils in your gardenW
And one whose weeds are laughing at his harvestR3
May as well have no garden for not thereR
Shall he be gleaning the few bits and ortsH2
Of life that are to save him For my partR3
I am again with you here among shadowsH2
That will not always be so dark as thisH2
Though now I see there's yet an evil in meY
That made me let you be afraid of meY
No I was not afraid not even of lifeA2
I thought I was I must have time for thisH2
And all the time there is will not be longO4
I cannot tell you what the Master sawH2
This morning in my eyes I do not knowH2
I cannot yet say how far I have goneP4
Or why it is that I am here againB
Or where the old road leads I do not knowH2
I know that when I did come back I sawH2
His eyes again among the trees and facesH2
Only His eyes and they looked into mineI4
Long into mine long long as if He knewF
