John Evereldown Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABAAAB CBCBCCCB DBDBDDDB EBEBEEEB

Where are you going to night to nightA
Where are you going John EvereldownB
There's never the sign of a star in sightA
Nor a lamp that's nearer than Tilbury TownB
Why do you stare as a dead man mightA
Where are you pointing away from the lightA
And where are you going to night to nightA
Where are you going John EvereldownB
-
Right through the forest where none can seeC
There's where I'm going to Tilbury TownB
The men are asleep or awake may beC
But the women are calling John EvereldownB
Ever and ever they call for meC
And while they call can a man be freeC
So right through the forest where none can seeC
There's where I'm going to Tilbury TownB
-
But why are you going so late so lateD
Why are you going John EvereldownB
Though the road be smooth and the path be straightD
There are two long leagues to Tilbury TownB
Come in by the fire old man and waitD
Why do you chatter out there by the gateD
And why are you going so late so lateD
Why are you going John EvereldownB
-
I follow the women wherever they callE
That's why I'm going to Tilbury TownB
God knows if I pray to be done with it allE
But God is no friend to John EvereldownB
So the clouds may come and the rain may fallE
The shadows may creep and the dead men crawlE
But I follow the women wherever they callE
And that's why I'm going to Tilbury TownB
