There but for the grace of God goesA
-
-
There is a question that I askB
And ask againC
What hunger was half hidden by the maskB
That he wore thenC
-
There was a word for me to sayD
That I said notE
And in the past there was another dayD
That I forgotE
-
A dreary cold unwholesome dayD
Racked overheadF
As if the world were turning the wrong wayD
And the sun deadF
-
A day that comes back well enoughG
Now he is goneH
What then Has memory no other stuffG
To seize uponI
-
Wherever he may wander nowJ
In his despairK
Would he be more contented in the sloughG
If all were thereK
-
And yet he brought a kind of lightL
Into the roomM
And when he left a tinge of something brightL
Survived the gloomM
-
Why will he not be where he isN
And not with meO
The hours that are my life are mine not hisN
Or used to beO
-
What numerous imps invisibleP
Has he at handQ
Far flying and forlorn as what they tellR
At his commandQ
-
What hold of weirdness or of worthS
Can he possessT
That he may speak from anywhere on earthS
His lonelinessU
-
Shall I be caught and held againC
In the old netV
He brought a sorry sunbeam with him thenC
But it beams yetV
