Atherton's Gambit Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDEE FFCCGGCC ABCCHIJJ KKLLCCMM NNCCOOPP

The Master played the bishop s pawnA
For jest while Atherton looked onB
The master played this way and thatC
And Atherton amazed thereatC
Said Now I have a thing in viewD
That will enlighten one or twoD
And make a difference or soE
In what it is they do not knowE
-
The morning stars together sangF
And forth a mighty music rangF
Not heard by many save as toldC
Again through magic manifoldC
By such a few as have to playG
For others in the Master s wayG
The music that the Master madeC
When all the morning stars obeyedC
-
Atherton played the bishop s pawnA
While more than one or two looked onB
Atherton played this way and thatC
And many a friend amused thereatC
Went on about his businessH
Nor cared for Atherton the lessI
A few stood longer by the gameJ
With Atherton to them the sameJ
-
The morning stars are singing stillK
To crown to challenge and to killK
And if perforce there falls a voiceL
On pious ears that have no choiceL
Except to urge an erring handC
To wreak its homage on the landC
Who of us that is worth his whileM
Will if he listen more than smileM
-
Who of us being what he isN
May scoff at others ecstasiesN
However we may shine to dayC
More shining ones are on the wayC
And so it were not wholly wellO
To be at odds with AzraelO
Nor were it kind of any oneP
To sing the end of AthertonP
