Withal a meagre man was Aaron StarkA
Cursed and unkempt shrewd shrivelled and moroseB
A miser was he with a miser's noseC
And eyes like little dollars in the darkA
His thin pinched mouth was nothing but a markA
And when he spoke there came like sullen blowsC
Through scattered fangs a few snarled words and closeB
As if a cur were chary of its barkA

Glad for the murmur of his hard renownD
Year after year he shambled through the townD
A loveless exile moving with a staffE
And oftentimes there crept into his earsF
A sound of alien pity touched with tearsG
And then and only then did Aaron laughE
