The Owl Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB CDED FEEE GHIH

DOWNHILL I came hungry and yet not starvedA
Cold yet had heat within me that was proofB
Against the north wind tired yet so that restC
Had seemed the sweetest thing under a roofB
-
Then at the inn I had food fire and restC
Knowing how hungry cold and tired was ID
All of the night was quite barred out exceptE
An owl's cry a most melancholy cryD
-
Shaken out long and clear upon the hillF
No merry note nor cause of merrimentE
But one telling me plain what I escapedE
And others could not that night as in I wentE
-
And salted was my food and my reposeG
Salted and sobered too by the bird's voiceH
Speaking for all who lay under the starsI
Soldiers and poor unable to rejoiceH
