The Splitter Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGFGF HIHIJFJF FKFKLMLM NONODPDP

IN THE MORN when the keen blade bites the treeA
And the chips on the dead leaves danceB
And the bush echoes back right merrilyA
Blow for blow as the sunbeams glanceB
From the axe when it sweeps in circles trueC
Then the splitter at heart is gayD
He exults in the work he s set to doC
And he feels like a boy at playD
-
Swinging free with a stroke that s straight and strongE
To the heart of the messmate sentF
He is cheered by the magpie s morning songE
With the ring of the metal blentF
But the birds in their terror scatter highG
When she falls with a rush and boundF
And the quivering saplings split and flyG
And the ranges all roar aroundF
-
Who is lord when the axeman mounts his sparH
And the breeze on his brown breast blowsI
When the scent of the new wood floats afarH
And the gum from its red wounds flowsI
With the bush at his back he laughs at careJ
With a pipe and a right good mateF
There is drink in the billy grub to spareJ
And a bunk in the ten by eightF
-
When the sun s in the west from nooks aloftF
Where the stringy is straight and tallK
Come the strains of a chorus quaint and softF
Or the clink of the wedge and maulK
From the gully a murmur of broken talkL
Or the song that the crosscut singsM
For the bush is a dream and high the hawkL
Hangs at rest on his cradling wingsM
-
But at night by the tent when tea is doneN
And when euchre s begun to flagO
In the bush he may hear a distant gunN
Or the neigh of a lonely nagO
Then the splitter has thoughts no longer gayD
And sorrows he cannot drownP
For he dreams of a girl who s far awayD
Or the joys of a spree in townP
