The Trifler Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD BEBE FGFH IJIJ

Death's the lover that I'd be takingA
Wild and fickle and fierce is heB
Small's his care if my heart be breakingA
Gay young Death would have none of meB
-
Hear them clack of my haste to greet himC
No one other my mouth had kissedD
I had dressed me in silk to meet himC
False young Death would not hold the trystD
-
Slow's the blood that was quick and stormyB
Smooth and cold is the bridal bedE
I must wait till he whistles for meB
Proud young Death would not turn his headE
-
I must wait till my breast is wiltedF
I must wait till my back is bowedG
I must rock in the corner jiltedF
Death went galloping down the roadH
-
Gone's my heart with a trifling roverI
Fine he was in the game he playedJ
Kissed and promised and threw me overI
And rode away with a prettier maidJ
