and scarcely worth the trouble at thatA
-
The same to me are somber days and gayB
Though Joyous dawns the rosy morn and brightC
Because my dearest love is gone awayB
Within my heart is melancholy nightC
-
My heart beats low in loneliness despiteC
That riotous Summer holds the earth in swayB
In cerements my spirit is bedightC
The same to me are somber days and gayB
-
Though breezes in the rippling grasses playB
And waves dash high and far in glorious mightC
I thrill no longer to the sparkling dayB
Though joyous dawns the rosy morn and brightC
-
Ungraceful seems to me the swallow's flightC
As well might heaven's blue be sullen grayB
My soul discerns no beauty in their sightC
Because my dearest love is gone awayB
-
Let roses fling afar their crimson sprayB
And virgin daisies splash the fields with whiteC
Let bloom the poppy hotly as it mayB
Within my heart is melancholy nightC
-
And this O love my pitiable plightC
Whenever from my circling arms you strayB
This little world of mine has lost its lightC
I hope to God my dear that you can sayB
The same to meD
