Oh ponder friend the porcupineA
Refresh your recollectionB
And sit a moment to defineA
His means of self protectionB
-
How truly fortified is heC
Where is the beast his doubleD
In forethought of emergencyC
And readiness for troubleD
-
Recall his figure and his shadeE
How deftly planned and clearlyC
For slithering through the dappled gladeE
Unseen or pretty nearlyC
-
Yet should an alien eye discernF
His presence in the woodlandG
How little has he left to learnF
Of self defense My good landG
-
For he can run as swift as soundH
To where his goose may hang highI
Or thrust his head against the groundH
And tunnel half to ShanghaiI
-
Or he can climb the dizziest boughJ
Unhesitant mechanicK
And resting dash from off his browJ
The bitter beads of panicK
-
Or should pursuers press him hotL
One scarcely needs to mentionB
His quick and cruel barbs that gotL
Shakespearean attentionB
-
Or driven to his final ditchM
To his extremest thicketN
He'll fight with claws and molars whichM
Is not considered cricketO
-
How amply armored he to fendP
The fear of chase that haunts himQ
How well prepared our little friendP
And who the devil wants himQ
