When I was bold when I was boldA
And that's a hundred yearsB
Oh never I thought my breast could holdA
The terrible weight of tearsC
-
I said Now some be dolorousC
I hear them wail and sighD
And if it be Love that play them thusC
Then never a love will ID
-
I said I see them rack and rueE
I see them wring and acheF
And little I'll crack my heart in twoE
With little the heart can breakF
-
When I was gay when I was gayG
It's ninety years and nineH
Oh never I thought that Death could layG
His terrible hand in mineH
-
I said He plies his trade amongI
The musty and infirmJ
A body so hard and bright and youngI
Could never be meat for wormJ
-
I see him dull their eyes I saidK
And still their rattling breathL
And how under God could I be deadK
That never was meant for DeathL
-
But Love came by to quench my sleepM
And here's my sundered heartN
And bitter's my woe and black and deepM
And little I guessed a partN
-
Yet this there is to cool my breastO
And this to ease my spellP
Now if I were Love's like all the restO
Then can I be Death's as wellP
-
And he shall have me sworn and boundQ
And I'll be done with LoveR
And better I'll be below the groundQ
Than ever I'll be aboveR
