The First Night Of Fall And Falling Rain Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHIJKCLMKNBBBB DLJOPBQBRB

The common rain had come againA
Slanting and colorless pale and anonymousB
Fainting falling in the first eveningC
Of the first perception of the actual fallD
The long and late light had slowly gathered upE
A sooty wood of clouded sky dim and distant more andF
moreG
Until at dusk the very sense of selfhood wanedH
A weakening nothing halted diminished or denied or setI
asideJ
Neither tea nor after an hour whiskeyK
Ice and then a pleasant glow a burningC
And the first leaping wood fireL
Since a cold night in May too long ago to be more thanM
Merely a cold and vivid memoryK
Staring empty and without thoughtN
Beyond the rising mists of the emotion of causelessB
sadnessB
How suddenly all consciousness leaped in spontaneousB
gladnessB
Knowing without thinking how the falling rain outside allD
overL
In slow sustained consistent vibration all over outsideJ
Tapping window streaking roofO
running down runnel and drainP
Waking a sense once more of all that lived outside of usB
Beyond emotion for beyond the swollenQ
distorted shadows and lightsB
Of the toy town and the vanity fairR
of waking consciousnessB
