THE silver cord is loosed he saidA
The golden bowl is brokenB
A few more prayers having been prayedC
A few more love words spokenB
I shall turn my face unto the wallD
And sleeping not be wokenB
Is it a better place my childE
That thou art gone untoF
Upon this earth that thou hast leftG
Hadst thou not much to doF
Would not thy joys have been a crowdH
And thy troubles small and fewF
Beauty and rank and friends and wealthI
Genius and excellenceJ
Could not all these thy heritageK
Win thee from hastening henceL
Was the soul so much more unto theeM
Than joys of mind and senseL
And bending with an English graceN
The ladies of our isleO
With their soft curls and their virgin eyesP
Which look so sweet the whileO
Had given thee for thy noblenessP
A precious golden smileO
These will not now be thine thy life'sP
Appointed periodQ
Being past o'er thou liest onR
The folded pinions broadS
Of the Seraph who is bearing theeM
Up through the sun to GodT
It has a solemn sound to GodT
And strange high thoughts it weavesP
Of a garden where the Tree of LifeU
Its mystic shadow givesP
And the music of the rapid worldsP
Is the wind that stirs the leavesP
Surely it is a better placeP
Wealth shuts not there his kenV
From woes his heart yearns to assuageW
Nor noble originB
Wounds him by lessening trust betwixtX
Him and his fellow menV
Nor friends die from him but insteadA
Come to him where he isP
Nor Passion rank with evil joysP
And worse satietiesP
Pouting her crimson lips at himY
Layeth her cheek to hisP
Nor priests be there like a bad dreamZ
That at your bed's foot standsP
All night and yet it goes at lastA2
Nor moans of king curst landsP
Make his breast heave and his pale browB2
To drop into his handsP
But Love walks always with him nowB2
And Faith not chained but freeM
And Hope bent forward and with hairC2
Held back continuallyM
To hear the distant chariot wheelsP
And wise calm CharityM
