-
THROUGH ME THE WAY INTO THE SUFFERING CITYA
THROUGH ME THE WAY TO THE ETERNAL PAINC
THROUGH ME THE WAY THAT RUNS AMONG THE LOSTA
-
-
Giustizia mosse il mio alto fattoreB
fecemi la divina podestateA
la somma sapienza e 'l primo amoreB
-
JUSTICE URGED ON MY HIGH ARTIFICERB
MY MAKER WAS DIVINE AUTHORITYA
THE HIGHEST WISDOM AND THE PRIMAL LOVED
-
-
Dinanzi a me non fuor cose createA
se non etterne e io etterno duroB
Lasciate ogne speranza voi ch'intrate quotA
-
BEFORE ME NOTHING BUT ETERNAL THINGSE
WERE MADE AND I ENDURE ETERNALLYA
ABANDON EVERY HOPE WHO ENTER HEREB
-
-
-
These words their aspect was obscure I readA
inscribed above a gateway and I saidA
quot Master their meaning is difficult for me quotA
-
-
Ed elli a me come persona accortaA
Qui si convien lasciare ogne sospettoA
ogne vilt convien che qui sia mortaA
-
And he to me as one who comprehendsF
quot Here one must leave behind all hesitationG
here every cowardice must meet its deathH
-
-
Noi siam venuti al loco ov'i' t'ho dettoA
-
For we have reached the place of which I spokeI
where you will see the miserable peopleJ
those who have lost the good of the intellect quotA
-
-
E poi che la sua mano a la mia puoseF
con lieto volto ond'io mi confortaiA
mi mise dentro a le segrete coseF
-
And when with gladness in his face he placedA
his hand upon my own to comfort meA
he drew me in among the hidden thingsF
-
-
Quivi sospiri pianti e alti guaiI
risonavan per l'aere sanza stelleK
per ch'io al cominciar ne lagrimaiA
-
Here sighs and lamentations and loud criesF
were echoing across the starless airB
so that as soon as I set out I weptA
-
-
Diverse lingue orribili favelleK
-
Strange utterances horrible pronouncementsF
accents of anger words of sufferingI
and voices shrill and faint and beating handsF
-
-
facevano un tumulto il qual s'aggiraA
sempre in quell'aura sanza tempo tintaA
come la rena quando turbo spiraA
-
all went to make a tumult that will whirlK
forever through that turbid timeless airA
like sand that eddies when a whirlwind swirlsF
-
-
-
And I my head oppressed by horror saidA
quot Master what is it that I hear Who areA
those people so defeated by their pain quotA
-
-
Ed elli a me Questo misero modoA
tegnon l'anime triste di coloroA
che visser sanza 'nfamia e sanza lodoA
-
And he to me quot This miserable wayL
is taken by the sorry souls of thoseF
who lived without disgrace and without praiseF
-
-
Mischiate sono a quel cattivo coroA
de li angeli che non furon ribelliK
n fur fedeli a Dio ma per s fuoroA
-
They now commingle with the coward angelsF
the company of those who were not rebelsF
nor faithful to their God but stood apartA
-
-
Caccianli i ciel per non esser men belliK
n lo profondo inferno li riceveD
ch'alcuna gloria i rei avrebber d'elliK
-
The heavens that their beauty not be lessenedA
have cast them out nor will deep Hell receive themA
even the wicked cannot glory in them quotA
-
-
E io Maestro che tanto greveD
a lor che lamentar li fa s forteA
Rispuose Dicerolti molto breveD
-
And I quot What is it master that oppressesF
these souls compelling them to wail so loud quotA
He answered quot I shall tell you in few wordsF
-
-
Questi non hanno speranza di morteA
e la lor cieca vita tanto bassaA
che 'nvidiosi son d'ogne altra sorteA
-
Those who are here can place no hope in deathH
and their blind life is so abject that theyA
are envious of every other fateA
-
-
-
The world will let no fame of theirs endureA
both justice and compassion must disdain themA
let us not talk of them but look and pass quotA
-
-
E io che riguardai vidi una 'nsegnaG
che girando correva tanto rattaA
che d'ogne posa mi parea indegnaG
-
And I looking more closely saw a bannerA
that as it wheeled about raced on so quickI
that any respite seemed unsuited to itA
-
-
e dietro le ven a s lunga trattaA
di gente ch'i' non averei credutoA
che morte tanta n'avesse disfattaA
-
Behind that banner trailed so long a fileK
of people I should never have believedA
that death could have unmade so many soulsA
-
-
Poscia ch'io v'ebbi alcun riconosciutoA
vidi e conobbi l'ombra di coluiK
che fece per viltade il gran rifiutoA
-
After I had identified a fewD
I saw and recognized the shade of himA
who made through cowardice the great refusalK
-
-
Incontanente intesi e certo fuiD
a Dio spiacenti e a' nemici suiA
-
At once I understood with certaintyA
this company contained the cowardlyA
hateful to God and to His enemiesA
-
-
Questi sciaurati che mai non fur viviD
erano ignudi e stimolati moltoA
da mosconi e da vespe ch'eran iviD
-
These wretched ones who never were aliveD
went naked and were stung again againG
by horseflies and by wasps that circled themA
-
-
Elle rigavan lor di sangue il voltoA
che mischiato di lagrime a' lor piediA
da fastidiosi vermi era ricoltoA
-
The insects streaked their faces with their bloodA
which mingled with their tears fell at their feetA
where it was gathered up by sickening wormsA
-
-
E poi ch'a riguardar oltre mi diediA
per ch'io dissi Maestro or mi concediA
-
And then looking beyond them I could seeA
a crowd along the bank of a great riverA
at which I said quot Allow me now to knowG
-
-
ch'i' sappia quali sono e qual costumeA
le fa di trapassar parer s pronteA
com'io discerno per lo fioco lumeA
-
who are these people master and what lawK
has made them seem so eager for the crossingI
as I can see despite the feeble light quotA
-
-
Ed elli a me Le cose ti fier conteA
quando noi fermerem li nostri passiA
su la trista riviera d'AcheronteA
-
And he to me quot When we have stopped alongI
the melancholy shore of AcheronG
then all these matters will be plain to you quotA
-
-
Allor con li occhi vergognosi e bassiA
temendo no 'l mio dir li fosse graveD
infino al fiume del parlar mi trassiA
-
At that with eyes ashamed downcast and fearingI
that what I said had given him offenseA
I did not speak until we reached the riverA
-
-
Ed ecco verso noi venir per naveD
un vecchio bianco per antico peloK
gridando Guai a voi anime praveD
-
And here advancing toward us in a boatA
an aged man his hair was white with yearsA
was shouting quot Woe to you corrupted soulsA
-
-
Non isperate mai veder lo cieloK
i' vegno per menarvi a l'altra rivaD
ne le tenebre etterne in caldo e 'n geloK
-
Forget your hope of ever seeing HeavenG
I come to lead you to the other shoreA
to the eternal dark to fire and frostA
-
-
-
And you approaching there you living soulK
keep well away from these they are the dead quotA
But when he saw I made no move to goG
-
-
disse Per altra via per altri portiA
verrai a piaggia non qui per passareA
pi lieve legno convien che ti portiA
-
he said quot Another way and other harborsA
not here will bring you passage to your shoreA
a lighter craft will have to carry you quotA
-
-
-
My guide then quot Charon don't torment yourselfD
our passage has been willed above where OneG
can do what He has wiL
