Where The Sun Rises And Where It Sets Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHI GJFJKLGJJMNNGOO PQLJ ARSTJS

Once when returning from far TransylvaniaA
Through mountain forests rocks and Carpathian ridgesB
Halting by a ford at the close of dayC
My companions had sent me ahead to lookD
For passage I let my horse grazeE
And out of the saddlebag took the Holy ScriptureF
The light was so gracious murmur of streams so sweetG
That reading Paul's epistles and seeing the first starH
I was soon lulled into a profound sleepI
-
A young man in ornate Greek raimentG
Touched my arm and I heard his voiceJ
'Your time O mortals hastens by like waterF
I have descended and known its absyssJ
It was I whom cruel Paul chastised in CorinthK
For having stolen my father's wifeL
And by his order I was to be excludedG
From the table at which we shared our mealsJ
Since then I have not been in gatherings of the saintsJ
And for many years I was led by the sinful loveM
Of a poor plaything given to temptationN
And so we doomed ourselves to eternal ruinN
But my Lord and my God whom I knew notG
Tore me from the ashes with his lightningO
In his eyes your truths count for nothingO
His mercy saves all living flesh '-
-
Awake under a huge starry skyP
Having received help unhoped forQ
Absolved of care about our platry lifeL
I wiped my eyes wet with tearsJ
-
No I have never been to TransylvaniaA
I have never brought messages from there to my churchR
But I could haveS
This is an exercise in styleT
The pluperfect tenseJ
Of countries imperfectiveS
