Preface Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EDFG HBIJK JLMDN MMMO

First plain speech in the mother tongueA
Hearing it you should be able to seeB
Apple trees a river the bend of a roadC
As if in a flash of summer lightningD
-
And it should contain more than imagesE
It has been lured by singsongD
A daydream melody DefenselessF
It was bypassed by the sharp dry worldG
-
You often ask yourself why you feel shameH
Whenever you look through a book of poetryB
As if the author for reasons unclear to youI
Addressed the worse side of your natureJ
Pushing aside thought cheating thoughtK
-
Seasoned with jokes clowning satireJ
Poetry still knows how to pleaseL
Then its excellence is much admiredM
But the grave combats where life is at stakeD
Are fought in prose It was not always soN
-
And our regret has remained unconfessedM
Novels and essays serve but will not lastM
One clear stanza can take more weightM
Than a whole wagon of elaborate proseO
