Faithful mother tongueA
I have been serving youB
Every night I used to set before you little bowls of colorsC
so you could have your birch your cricket your finchD
as preserved in my memoryE
-
This lasted many yearsF
You were my native land I lacked any otherG
I believed that you would also be a messengerG
between me and some good peopleH
even if they were few twenty tenI
or not born as yetJ
-
Now I confess my doubtK
There are moments when it seems to me I have squandered my lifeL
For you are a tongue of the debasedM
of the unreasonable hating themselvesN
even more than they hate other nationsO
a tongue of informersC
a tongue of the confusedP
ill with their own innocenceQ
-
But without you who am IR
Only a scholar in a distant countryE
a success without fears and humiliationsO
Yes who am I without youB
Just a philosopher like everyone elseS
-
I understand this is meant as my educationT
the glory of individuality is taken awayU
Fortune spreads a red carpetV
before the sinner in a morality playU
while on the linen backdropp a magic lantern throwsW
images of human and divine tortureG
-
Faithful mother tongueA
perhaps after all it's I who must try to save youB
So I will continue to set before you little bowls of colorsC
bright and pure if possibleH
for what is needed in misfortune is a little order and beautyE
