When everything was fineA
And the notion of sin had vanishedB
And the earth was readyC
In universal peaceD
To consume and rejoiceE
Without creeds and utopiasF
-
I for unknown reasonsG
Surrounded by the booksH
Of prophets and theologiansG
Of philosophers poetsI
Searched for an answerJ
Scowling grimacingK
Waking up at night muttering at dawnL
-
What oppressed me so muchM
Was a bit shamefulN
Talking of it aloudO
Would show neither tact nor prudenceP
It might even seem an outrageQ
Against the health of mankindR
-
Alas my memoryC
Does not want to leave meC
And in it live beingsS
Each with its own painT
Each with its own dyingK
Its own trepidationU
-
Why then innocenceP
On paradisal beachesF
An impeccable skyV
Over the church of hygieneW
Is it because thatX
Was long agoY
-
To a saintly manZ
So goes an Arab taleA2
God said somewhat maliciouslyC
Had I revealed to peopleN
How great a sinner you areB2
They could not praise youC2
-
And I answered the pious oneU
Had I unveiled to themD2
How merciful you areB2
They would not care for youC2
-
To whom should I turnE2
With that affair so darkF2
Of pain and also guiltG2
In the structure of the worldH2
If either here belowY
Or over there on highV
No power can abolishI2
The cause and the effectJ2
-
Don't think don't rememberJ
The death on the crossK2
Though everyday He diesL2
The only one all lovingK
Who without any needM2
Consented and allowedO
To exist all that isN2
Including nails of tortureJ
-
Totally enigmaticO2
Impossibly intricateP2
Better to stop speech hereQ2
This language is not for peopleN
Blessed be jubilationU
Vintages and harvestsR2
Even if not everyoneU
Is granted serenityC
