Thou tranquil night and thou O gentle rayA
Of the declining moon and thou that o'erB
The rock appearest 'mid the silent groveC
The messenger of day how dear ye wereB
And how delightful to these eyes while yetD
Unknown the furies and grim Fate But nowE
No gentle sight can soothe this wounded soulF
Then only can forgotten joy reviveG
When through the air and o'er the trembling fieldsH
The raging south wind whirls its clouds of dustI
And when the car the pondrous car of JoveG
Omnipotent high thundering o'er our headsJ
A pathway cleaves athwart the dusky skyK
Then would I love with storm charged clouds to flyK
Along the cliffs along the valleys deepL
The headlong flight of frightened flocks to watchM
Or hear upon some swollen river's shoreN
The angry billows' loud triumphant roarN
-
How beautiful thou art O heaven divineO
And thou O dewy earth Alas no partP
Of all this beauty infinite the godsQ
And cruel fate to wretched Sappho gaveG
To thy proud realms O Nature I a poorR
Unwelcome guest rejected lover comeS
To all thy varied forms of lovelinessQ
My heart and eyes a suppliant lift in vainT
The sun lit shore hath smiles no more for meU
Nor radiant morning light at heaven's gateV
The birds no longer greet me with their songsQ
Nor whispering trees with gracious messagesQ
And where beneath the bending willows' shadeW
The limpid stream its bosom pure displaysQ
As I with trembling and uncertain footX
Oppressed with grief upon its margin pauseQ
The dimpled waves recoil as in disdainT
And urge their flight along the flowery plainT
-
What fearful crime what hideous excessQ
Have so defiled me e'en before my birthY
That heaven and fortune frown upon me thusQ
Wherein have I offended as a childZ
When we of evil deeds are ignorantA2
That thus disfigured of the bloom of youthB2
Bereft my little thread of life has fromS
The spindle of the unrelenting FateV
Been drawn Alas incautious are thy wordsQ
Mysterious counsels all events controlF
And all except our grief is mysteryU
Deserted children we were born to weepL
But why is known to those above aloneC2
O vain the cares the hopes of earlier yearsQ
To idle shows Jove gives eternal swayA
O'er human hearts Unless in shining robes arrayedW
All manly deeds in arms or art or songD2
Appeal in vain unto the vulgar throngD2
-
I die This wretched veil to earth I castE2
And for my naked soul a refuge seekF2
Below and for the cruel faults atoneC2
Of gods the blind dispensers of eventsQ
And thou to whom I have been bound so longD2
By hopeless love and lasting faith and byK
The frenzy vain of unappeased desireB
Live live and if thou canst be happy hereG2
My cup o'erflows with bitterness and JoveG
Has from his vase no drop of sweetness shedH2
For all my childhood's hopes and dreams have fledH2
The happiest day the soonest fades awayA
And then succeed disease old age the shadeW
Of icy death Behold alas Of allI2
My longed for laurels my illusions dearJ2
The end the gulf of hell My spirit proudK2
Must to the realm of Proserpine descendL2
The Stygian shore the night that knows no endL2
