OR OF THE BEGINNINGS OF THE HUMAN RACEB
-
Illustrious fathers of the human raceB
Of you the song of your afflicted sonsC
Will chant the praise of you more dear by farD
Unto the Great Disposer of the starsE
Who were not born to wretchedness like oursF
Immedicable woes a life of tearsG
The silent tomb eternal night to findH
More sweet by far than the ethereal lightI
These things were not by heaven's gracious lawJ
Imposed on you If ancient legends speakK
Of sins of yours that brought calamityL
Upon the human race and fell diseaseM
Alas the sins more terrible by farD
Committed by your children and their soulsN
More restless and with mad ambition fixedO
Against them roused the wrath of angry godsP
The hand of all sustaining Nature armedQ
By them so long neglected and despisedR
Then life became a burden and a curseS
And every new born babe a thing abhorredT
And hell and chaos reigned upon the earthU
-
Thou first the day and thou the shining lightsV
Of the revolving stars didst see the fieldsW
And their new flocks and herds O leader oldX
And father of the human familyL
The wandering air that o'er the meadows playedY
When smote the rocks and the deserted valesZ
The torrent rustling headlong from the AlpsA2
With sound till then unheard and o'er the sitesV
Of future nations noisy cities yet unknownB2
To fame a peace profound mysterious reignedC2
And o'er the unploughed hills in silence roseD2
The ray of Phoebus and the golden moonE2
O world how happy in thy lonelinessF2
Of crimes and of disasters ignorantG2
Oh how much wretchedness Fate had in storeH2
For thy poor race unhappy father whatI2
A series vast of terrible eventsJ2
Behold the fields scarce tilled with blood are stainedC2
A brother's blood in sudden frenzy shedK2
And now alas first hears the gentle airL2
The whirring of the fearful wings of DeathM2
The trembling fratricide a fugitiveN2
The lonely shades avoids in every blastO2
That sweeps the groves a voice of wrath he hearsP2
He the first city builds abode and realmQ2
Of wasting cares repentance desperateR2
Heart sick and groaning thus unites and bindsS2
Together blind and sinful souls and firstT2
A refuge offers unto mutual guiltU2
The wicked hand now scorns the crooked ploughV2
The sweat of honest labor is despisedR
Now sloth possession of the threshold takesW2
The sluggish frames their native vigor loseX2
The minds in hopeless indolence are sunkY2
And slavery the crowning curse of allZ2
Degrades and crushes poor humanityL
-
And thou from heaven's wrath and ocean's wavesA3
That bellowed round the cloud capped mountain topsB3
The sinful brood didst save thou unto whomC3
From the dark air and wave encumbered hillsD3
The white dove brought the sign of hope renewedE3
And sinking in the west the shipwrecked sunF3
His bright rays darting through the angry cloudsG3
The dark sky painted with the lovely bowV2
The race restored to earth returned begins anewH3
The same career of wickedness and lustI3
With their attendant ills Audacious manJ3
Defies the threats of the avenging seaL
And to new shores and to new stars repeatsK3
The same sad tale of infamy and woeL3
-
And now of thee I think the just and braveM3
The Father of the faithful and the sonsC
Thy honored name that bore Of thee I speakK
Whom sitting thoughtful in the noontide shadeY
Before thy humble cottage near the banksN3
That gave thy flocks both rest and nourishmentG2
The minds ethereal of celestial guestsO3
With blessings greeted and of thee O sonF3
Of wise Rebecca how at eventideG2
In Aran's valley sweet and by the wellP3
Where happy swains in friendly converse metG2
Thou didst with Laban's daughter fall in loveQ3
Love that to exile long and sufferingR3
And to the odious yoke of servitudeG2
Thy patient soul a willing martyr ledG2
-
Oh surely once for not with idle talesZ
And shadows the Aonian song and voiceS3
Of Fame the eager list'ners feed once wasT3
This wretched earth more friendly to our raceB
Was more beloved and dear and golden flewH3
The days that now so laden are with careL2
Not that the milk in waves of purest whiteG2
Gushed from the rocks and flowed along the valesZ
Or that the tigers mingled with the sheepU3
To the same fold were led or shepherd boysV3
With playful wolves would frolic at the springR3
But of its own lot ignorant and allZ2
The sufferings that were in store devoidG2
Of care it lived a soft illusive veilW3
Of error hid the stern realitiesM
The cruel laws of heaven and of fateG2
Life glided on with cheerful hope contentG2
And tranquil sought the haven of its restG2
-
So lives in California's forests vastG2
A happy race whose life blood is not drainedG2
By pallid care whose limbs are not by fierceX3
Disease consumed the woods their food their homesY3
The hollow rock the streamlet of the valeW3
Its waters furnishes and unforeseenZ3
Dark death upon them steals Ah how unarmedG2
Wise Nature's happy votaries are yeL
Against our impious audacityL
Our fierce indomitable love of gainA4
Your shores your caves your quiet woods invadesB4
Your minds corrupts your bodies enervatesB4
And happiness a naked fugitiveN2
Before it drives to earth's remotest boundsB4
