The light of day was fading in the westA
The smoke no more from village chimneys curledB
Nor voice of man nor bark of dog was heardC
-
When she obedient to Love's rendezvousD
Had reached the middle of a plain than whichE
No other more bewitching could be foundF
-
The moon on every side her lustre shedG
And all in robes of silver light arrayedH
The trees with which the place was garlandedH
-
The rustling boughs were murmuring to the windH
And blending with the plaintive nightingaleI
A rivulet poured forth its sweet lamentH
-
The sea shone in the distance and the fieldsJ
And groves and slowly rising one by oneK
The summits of the mountains were revealedH
-
In quiet shade the sombre valley layL
While all the little hills around were clothedH
With the soft lustre of the dewy moonM
-
The maiden kept the silent lonely pathN
And gently passing o'er her face she feltH
The motion of the perfume laden breezeO
-
If she were happy it were vain to askP
The scene delighted her and the delightH
Her heart was promising was greater stillQ
-
How swift your flight O lovely hours sereneR
No other pleasure here below enduresS
Or lingers with us long save hope aloneT
-
The night began to change and dark becameU
The face of heaven that was so beautifulV
And all her pleasure now was turned to fearW
-
An angry cloud precursor of the stormX
Behind the mountains rose and still increasedH
Till moon or star no longer could be seenR
-
She saw it spreading upon every sideH
And by degrees ascending through the airY
And now with its black mantle covering allZ
-
The scanty light more faint and faint becameU
The wind meanwhile was rising in the groveA2
That on the farther side the spot enclosedH
-
And every moment was more boisterousB2
Till every bird awaking in its frightH
Amidst the trembling leaves was flutteringC2
-
The cloud increasing still unto the coastH
Descended so that one extremityH
The mountains touched the other touched the seaH
-
And now from out its black and hollow wombD2
The pattering rain drops falling fast were heardH
The sound increasing as the cloud drew nearW
-
And round her now the glancing lightning flashedH
In fearful mood and made her shut her eyesE2
The ground was black the air a mass of flameU
-
Her trembling knees could scarce her weight sustainF2
The thunder roared with a continuous soundH
Like torrent plunging headlong from the cliffG2
-
At times she paused the dismal scene to viewD
In blank dismay then on she ran againH2
Her hair and clothes all streaming in the windH
-
The cruel wind beat hard against her breastH
And rushing fiercely with its angry breathI2
The cold drops dashed remorseless in her faceJ2
-
The thunder like a beast assaulted herK2
With terrible unintermitting roarL2
And more and more the rain and tempest ragedH
-
And from all sides in wild confusion flewD
The dust and leaves the branches and the stonesM2
With hideous tumult inconceivableV
-
Her weary blinded eyes now coveringC2
And folding close her clothes against her breastH
She through the storm her fearful path pursuedH
-
But now the lightning glared so in her faceJ2
That overcome by fright at last she wentH
No farther and her heart within her sankN2
-
And back she turned And even as she turnedH
The lightning ceased to flash the air was darkO2
The thunder's voice was hushed the wind stood stillQ
And all was silent round and she at restH
