IA
-
The sun goes down in a cold pale flare of lightB
The trees grow dark the shadows lean to the eastC
And lights wink out through the windows one by oneD
A clamor of frosty sirens mourns at the nightB
Pale slate grey clouds whirl up from the sunken sunD
-
And the wandering one the inquisitive dreamer of dreamsE
The eternal asker of answers stands in the streetF
And lifts his palms for the first cold ghost of rainG
The purple lights leap down the hill before himH
The gorgeous night has begun againI
-
'I will ask them all I will ask them all their dreamsE
I will hold my light above them and seek their facesJ
I will hear them whisper invisible in their veins '-
The eternal asker of answers becomes as the darknessK
Or as a wind blown over a myriad forestL
Or as the numberless voices of long drawn rainsM
-
We hear him and take him among us like a wind of musicN
Like the ghost of a music we have somewhere heardO
We crowd through the streets in a dazzle of pallid lamplightO
We pour in a sinister wave ascend a stairP
With laughter and cry and word upon murmured wordO
We flow we descend we turn and the eternal dreamerQ
Moves among us like light like evening airP
-
Good night Good night Good night We go our waysR
The rain runs over the pavement before our feetO
The cold rain falls the rain singsS
We walk we run we ride We turn our facesJ
To what the eternal evening bringsS
-
Our hands are hot and raw with the stones we have laidO
We have built a tower of stone high into the skyA
We have built a city of towersT
-
Our hands are light they are singing with emptinessK
Our souls are light they have shaken a burden of hoursT
What did we build it for Was it all a dreamU
Ghostly above us in lamplight the towers gleamU
And after a while they will fall to dust and rainG
Or else we will tear them down with impatient handsV
And hew rock out of the earth and build them againI

-
One from his high bright window in a towerQ
Leans out as evening fallsW
And sees the advancing curtain of the showerQ
Splashing its silver on roofs and wallsW
Sees how swift as a shadow it crosses the cityO
And murmurs beyond far walls to the seaO
Leaving a glimmer of water in the dark canyonsX
And silver falling from eave and treeO
-
One from his high bright window looking downY
Peers like a dreamer over the rain bright townY
And thinks its towers are like a dreamU
The western windows flame in the sun's last flareP
Pale roofs begin to gleamU
-
Looking down from a window high in a wallZ
He sees us allZ
Lifting our pallid faces towards the rainG
Searching the sky and going our ways againI
Standing in doorways waiting under the treesA2
There in the high bright window he dreams and seesA2
What we are blind to we who mass and crowdO
From wall to wall in the darkening of a cloudO
-
The gulls drift slowly above the city of towersT
Over the roofs to the darkening sea they flyA
Night falls swiftly on an evening of rainG
The yellow lamps wink one by one againI
The towers reach higher and blacker against the skyA

-
One where the pale sea foamed at the yellow sandO
With wave upon slowly shattering waveB2
Turned to the city of towers as evening fellC2
And slowly walked by the darkening road toward itO
And saw how the towers darkened against the skyA
And across the distance heard the toll of a bellC2
-
Along the darkening road he hurried aloneD2
With his eyes cast downY
And thought how the streets were hoarse with a tide of peopleE2
With clamor of voices and numberless facesJ
And it seemed to him of a sudden that he would drownY
Here in the quiet of evening airP
These empty and voiceless placesJ
And he hurried towards the city to enter thereP
-
Along the darkening road between tall treesA2
That made a sinister whisper loudly he walkedO
Behind him sea gulls dipped over long grey seasA2
Before him numberless lovers smiled and talkedO
And death was observed with sudden criesF2
And birth with laughter and painG
And the trees grew taller and blacker against the skiesF2
And night came down againI

-
Up high black walls up sombre terracesJ
Clinging like luminous birds to the sides of cliffsG2
The yellow lights went climbing towards the skyA
From high black walls gleaming vaguely with rainG
Each yellow light looked down like a golden eyeA
-
They trembled from coign to coign and tower to towerQ
Along high terraces quicker than dream they flewH2
And some of them steadily glowed and some soon vanishedO
And some strange shadows threwH2
-
And behind them all the ghosts of thoughts went movingI2
Restlessly moving in each lamplit roomJ2
From chair to mirror from mirror to fireQ
From some the light was scarcely more than a gloomJ2
From some a dazzling desireQ
-
And there was one beneath black eaves who thoughtO
Combing with lifted arms her golden hairP
Of the lover who hurried towards her through the nightO
And there was one who dreamed of a sudden deathK2
As she blew out her lightO
-
And there was one who turned from clamoring streetsL2
And walked in lamplit gardens among black treesA2
And looked at the windy skyA
And thought with terror how stones and roots would freezeA2
And birds in the dead boughs cryA
-
And she hurried back as snow fell mixed with rainG
To mingle among the crowds againI
To jostle beneath blue lamps along the streetO
And lost herself in the warm bright coiling dreamU
With a sound of murmuring voices and shuffling feetO
-
And one from his high bright window looking downY
On luminous chasms that cleft the basalt townY
Hearing a sea like murmur riseF2
Desired to leave his dream descend from the towerQ
And drown in waves of shouts and laughter and criesF2

-
The snow floats down upon us mingled with rainG
It eddies around pale lilac lamps and fallsW
Down golden windowed wallsW
We were all born of flesh in a flare of painG
We do not remember the red roots whence we roseM2
But we know that we rose and walked that after a whileN2
We shall lie down againI
-
The snow floats down upon us we turn we turnO2
Through gorges filled with light we sound and flowP2
One is struck down and hurt we crowd about himH
We bear him away gaze after his listless bodyB2
But whether he lives or dies we do not knowP2
-
One of us sings in the street and we listen to himH
The words ring over us like vague bells of sorrowP2
He sings of a house he lived in long agoP2
It is strange this house of dust was the house I lived inQ2
The house you lived in the house that all of us knowP2
And coiling slowly about him and laughing at himH
And throwing him pennies we bear awayR2
A mournful echo of other times and placesJ
And follow a dream a dream that will not stayR2
-
Down long broad flights of lamplit stairs we flowP2
Noisy in scattered waves crowding and shoutingI2
In broken slow cascadesS2
The gardens extend before us We spread out swiftlyB2
Trees are above us and darkness The canyon fadesS2
-
And we recall with a gleaming stab of sadnessK
Vaguely and incoherently some dreamU
Of a world we came from a world of sun blue hillsT2
A black wood whispers around us green eyes gleamU
Someone cries in the forest and someone killsT2
-
We flow to the east to the white lined shivering seaB2
We reach to the west where the whirling sun went downY
We close our eyes to music in bright cafeesB2
We diverge from clamorous streets to streets that are silentO
We loaf where the wind spilled fountain playsB2
-
And growing tired we turn aside at lastO
Remember our secret selves seek out our towersB2
Lay weary hands on the banisters and climbU2
Climbing each to his little four square dreamU
Of love or lust or beauty or death or crimeU2

VIA
-
Over the darkened city the city of towersB2
The city of a thousand gatesB2
Over the gleaming terraced roofs the huddled towersB2
Over a somnolent whisper of loves and hatesB2
The slow wind flows drearily streams and fallsB2
With a mournful sound down rain dark wallsB2
On one side purples the lustrous dusk of the seaB2
And dreams in white at the city's feetO
On one side sleep the plains with heaped up hillsB2
Oaks and beeches whisper in rings about itO
Above the trees are towers where dread bells beatO
-
The fisherman draws his streaming net from the seaB2
And sails toward the far off city that seemsB2
Like one vague towerQ
The dark bow plunges to foam on blue black wavesB2
And shrill rain seethes like a ghostly music about himH
In a quiet showerQ
-
Rain with a shrill sings on the lapsing wavesB2
Rain thrills over the roofs againI
Like a shadow of shifting silver it crosses the cityB2
The lamps in the streets are streamed with rainG
And sparrows complain beneath deep eavesB2
And among whirled leavesB2
The sea gulls blowing from tower to lower towerQ
From wall to remoter wallZ
Skim with the driven rain to the rising sea soundO
And close grey wings and fallZ
-
Hearing great rain above me I now rememberQ
A girl who stood by the door and shut her eyesB2
Her pale cheeks glistened with rain she stood and shiveredO
Into a forest of silver she vanished slowlyB2
Voices about me riseB2
-
Voices clear and silvery voices of raindropsB2
'We struck with silver claws we struck her downY
We are the ghosts of the singing furies '-
A chorus of elfin voices blowing about meB2
Weaves to a babel of sound Each cries a secretO
I run among them reach out vain hands and drownY
-
'I am the one who stood beside you and smiledO
Thinking your face so strangely young '-
'I am the one who loved you but did not dare '-
'I am the one you followed through crowded streetsB2
The one who escaped you the one with red gleamed hair '-
-
'I am the one you saw to day who fellC2
Senseless before you hearing a certain bellC2
A bell that broke great memories in my brain '-
'I am the one who passed unnoticed before youH2
Invisible in a cloud of secret pain '-
-
'I am the one who suddenly cried beholdingI2
The face of a certain man on the dazzling screenV2
They wrote me that he was dead It was long agoP2
I walked in the streets for a long while hearing nothingI2
And returned to see it again And it was so '-
-
-
Weave weave weave you streaks of rainG
I am dissolved and woven againI
Thousands of faces rise and vanish before meB2
Thousands of voices weave in the rainG
-
'I am the one who rode beside you blinkingI2
At a dazzle of golden lightsB2
Tempests of music swept me I was thinkingI2
Of the gorgeous promise of certain nightsB2
Of the woman who suddenly smiled at me this dayR2
Smiled in a certain delicious sidelong wayR2
And turned as she reached the doorW2
To smile once moreW2
Her hands are whiter than snow on midnight waterQ
Her throat is golden and full of golden laughterQ
Her eyes are strange as the stealth of the moonX2
On a night in JuneX2
She runs among whistling leaves I hurry afterQ
She dances in dreams over white waved waterQ
Her body is white and fragrant and coolY2
Magnolia petals that float on a white starred poolY2
I have dreamed of her dreaming for many nightsB2
Of a broken music and golden lightsB2
Of broken webs of silver heavily fallingI2
Between my hands and their white desireQ
And dark leaved boughs edged with a golden radianceB2
Dipping to screen a fireQ
I dream that I walk with her beneath high treesB2
But as I lean to kiss her faceB2
She is blown aloft on wind I catch at leavesB2
And run in a moonless placeB2
And I hear a crashing of terrible rocks flung downY
And shattering trees and cracking wallsB2
And a net of intense white flame roars over the townY
And someone cries and darkness fallsB2
But now she has leaned and smiled at meB2
My veins are afire with musicN
Her eyes have kissed me my body is turned to lightO
I shall dream to her secret heart tonight '-
-
He rises and moves away he says no wordO
He folds his evening paper and turns awayR2
I rush through the dark with rows of lamplit facesB2
Fire bells peal and some of us turn to listenD
And some sit motionless in their accustomed placesB2
-
Cold rain lashes the car roof scurries in gustsB2
Streams down the windows in waves and ripples of lustreQ
The lamps in the streets are distorted and strangeZ2
Someone takes his watch from his pocket and yawnsB2
One peers out in the night for the place to changeZ2
-
Rain rain rain we are buried in rainG
It will rain forever the swift wheels hiss through waterQ
Pale sheets of water gleam in the windy streetO
The pealing of bells is lost in a drive of rain dropsB2
Remote and hurried the great bells beatO
-
'I am the one whom life so shrewdly betrayedO
Misfortune dogs me it always hunted me downY
And to day the woman I love lies deadO
I gave her roses a ring with opalsB2
These hands have touched her headO
-
'I bound her to me in all soft waysB2
I bound her to me in a net of daysB2
Yet now she has gone in silence and said no wordO
How can we face these dazzling things I ask youH2
There is no use we cry and are not heardO
-
'They cover a body with roses I shall not see itO
Must one return to the lifeless walls of a cityB2
Whose soul is charred by fire '-
His eyes are closed his lips press tightly togetherQ
Wheels hiss beneath us He yields us our desireQ
-
'No do not stare so he is weak with griefB2
He cannot face you he turns his eyes asideO
He is confused with painG
I suffered this I know It was long agoP2
He closes his eyes and drowns in death again '-
-
The wind hurls blows at the rain starred glistening windowsB2
The wind shrills down from the half seen wallsB2
We flow on the mournful wind in a dream of dyingI2
And at last a silence fallsB2
-

-
Midnight bells toll and along the cloud high towersB2
The golden lights go outO
The yellow windows darken the shades are drawnA3
In thousands of rooms we sleep we await the dawnA3
We lie face down we dreamU
We cry aloud with terror half rise or seemU
To stare at the ceiling or wallsB2
Midnight the last of shattering bell notes fallsB2
A rush of silence whirls over the cloud high towersB2
A vortex of soundless hoursB2
-
'The bells have just struck twelve I should be sleepingI2
But I cannot delay any longer to write and tell youH2
The woman is deadO
She died you know the way Just as we plannedO
Smiling with open sunlit eyesB2
Smiling upon the outstretched fatal hand '-
-
He folds his letter steps softly down the stairsB2
The doors are closed and silent A gas jet flaresB2
His shadow disturbs a shadow of balustradesB2
The door swings shut behind Night roars above himH
Into the night he fadesB2
-
Wind wind wind carving the wallsB2
Blowing the water that gleams in the streetO
Blowing the rain the sleetO
In the dark alley an old tree cracks and fallsB2
Oak boughs moan in the haunted airP
Lamps blow down with a crash and tinkle of glassB2
Darkness whistles Wild hours passB2
-
And those whom sleep eludes lie wide eyed hearingI2
Above their heads a goblin night go byA
Children are waked and cryA
The young girl hears the roar in her sleep and dreamsB2
That her lover is caught in a burning towerQ
She clutches the pillow she gasps for breath she screamsB2
And then by degrees her breath grows quiet and slowP2
She dreams of an evening long agoP2
Of colored lanterns balancing under treesB2
Some of them softly catching afireB3
And beneath the lanterns a motionless face she seesB2
Golden with lamplight smiling sereneV2
The leaves are a pale and glittering greenV2
The sound of horns blows over the trampled grassB2
Shadows of dancers passB2
The face smiles closer to hers she tries to leanV2
Backward away the eyes burn close and strangeZ2
The face is beginning to changeZ2
It is her lover she no longer desires to resistO
She is held and kissedO
She closes her eyes and melts in a seethe of flameC3
With a smoking ghost of shameC3
-
Wind wind wind Wind in an enormous brainG
Blowing dark thoughts like fallen leavesB2
The wind shrieks the wind grievesB2
It dashes the leaves on walls it whirls then againI
And the enormous sleeper vaguely and stupidly dreamsB2
And desires to stir to resist a ghost of painG
-
One whom the city imprisoned because of his cunningI2
Who dreamed for years in a towerQ
Seizes this hourQ
Of tumult and wind He files through the rusted barD3
Leans his face to the rain laughs up at the nightO
Slides down the knotted sheet swings over the wallZ
To fall to the street with a cat like fallZ
Slinks round a quavering rim of windy lightO
And at last is goneA3
Leaving his empty cell for the pallor of dawnA3
-
The mother whose child was buried to dayR2
Turns her face to the window her face is greyR2
And all her body is cold with the coldness of rainG
He would have grown as easily as a treeB2
He would have spread a pleasure of shade above herQ
He would have been his father againI
His growth was ended by a freezing invisible shadowP2
She lies and does not move and is stabbed by the rainG
-
Wind wind wind we toss and dreamU
We dream we are clouds and stars blown in a streamU
Windows rattle above our bedsB2
We reach vague gesturing hands we lift our headsB2
Hear sounds far off and dream with quivering breathK2
Our curious separate ways through life and deathK2
-
-
VIIIB2
-
The white fog creeps from the cold sea over the cityB2
Over the pale grey tumbled towersB2
And settles among the roofs the pale grey wallsB2
Along damp sinuous streets it crawlsB2
Curls like a dream among the motionless treesB2
And seems to freezeB2
-
The fog slips ghostlike into a thousand roomsB2
Whirls over sleeping facesB2
Spins in an atomy dance round misty street lampsB2
And blows in cloudy waves over open spacesB2
-
And one from his high window looking downY
Peers at the cloud white townY
And thinks its island towers are like a dreamU
It seems an enormous sleeper within whose brainG
Laborious shadows revolve and break and gleamU
