Wisdom After Victory Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EECCCCFF GGDDEEHH GGIICCEE

Now comes to an end all our dolorous driftingA
Clouds pass away and depression is liftingA
Because we were wise in our planning and soughtB
The lesser of ills that the greater be foughtB
Hope springs again in the heart of the nationC
Because we were brave and accepted oblationC
Of sharp sacrifice now comes recompense nearD
With the dawn of our glorious Centenary yearD
-
For the good of our souls have we borne the dark sorrowsE
Of that gloomy day which buys many bright morrowsE
For the good of our land have we chosen to shunC
The glittering sand that real treasure be wonC
And we who were counted the prodigal nationC
Have won new renown by our self immolationC
And the lands of the earth now in wonder beholdF
This youngest of lands in grave wisdom grown oldF
-
And now we return with new heart to our laborG
And where gloom was rife neighbor smiles upon neighborG
And now comes to light our Centenary yearD
Not the dawn of false hope ever followed by fearD
But a dawn that shall last and wax ever in brightnessE
Bringing strength to the weak to the heavy heart lightnessE
Bringing hope to the fearful and ending dismayH
Because we have chosen the fighter's hard wayH
-
Then let us not squander our hardly won treasureG
In pursuit of false joys and enfeebling leisureG
Tried in the fire we have proven our worthI
We have proven our strength to the peoples of earthI
If courage in ill days has won us salvationC
So wisdom in good days shall flee the temptationC
To seek prosperity vain foolish thingsE
Let us husband the gifts our Centenary bringsE
