Walhalla Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFDFGHGH IJIJCKLK MNMNNONA

Dark lady of the laggard dawnA
Hiding within her gully deepB
Long have night's curtains been withdrawnA
Before her earliest sun shaft's peepB
And long before the sun sinks downC
Eve's eager shadows creep her wayD
Committing to the sheltered townC
Nought but a niggard glimpse of dayD
-
And shy enough she seems these daysE
Who was long since belle of them allF
When booted diggers went their wayD
Around about her ramparts tallF
Full generous she was and proudG
Proffering gold by ton on tonH
Where once the toiling teaming crowdG
Made most of her ungenerous funH
-
For rich she was beyond beliefI
Full rich enough to make man's strifeJ
But her youth like her day was briefI
Too brief but filled with glamorous lifeJ
While her wealth spread her wide renownC
While gold called to man's highest hopesK
And urgent diggers crowded roundL
By these her mighty timbered slopesK
-
Now as calm days come and goM
Peaceful her quiet hamlet sleepsN
A full three thousand feet belowM
The far crests of her wooded steepsN
And nought save gnarled old English treesN
Stir to recall dead day passed onO
To leave her with proud memoriesN
Of great and golden youth long goneA
