| Veterans twain in this forest land | A |

| They lift spare limbs to the heartening sky | E |

| When they hid the quarry of hunting blacks | F |
| Ranging the forest with eyes on the tracks | F |
| That led to these lusty spare | H |
| Spars grown old ere the spoilers came | I |
| To give this forest to blade and flame | I |
| Too old to profit that ruthless greed | J |
| Which their likelier kinsmen went to feed | J |
