Two Veterans Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAACDDEE FGFFHIIJJ KLKKLMMEE

Side by side near the road they standA
Like grave old men grown wise with yearsB
Veterans twain in this forest landA
Marching together hand to handA
Sober as ancient seersC
Gnarled and bitten and scarred and bentD
Sap run sluggish and youth all spentD
They lift spare limbs to the heartening skyE
World worn and weary yet loth to dieE
-
They had known the bite of the blunt stone axeF
Wounds like warrior's long healed scarsG
When they hid the quarry of hunting blacksF
Ranging the forest with eyes on the tracksF
That led to these lusty spareH
Spars grown old ere the spoilers cameI
To give this forest to blade and flameI
Too old to profit that ruthless greedJ
Which their likelier kinsmen went to feedJ
-
For eight score summers the winds that blowK
Down thro' the forest have worked their willL
For eight score winters storm and snowK
Frost and fury have bowed them lowK
Yet stand the veterans stillL
By the side of the road where the cars run downM
With their transient freights to the mushroom townM
And they lift spare limbs to the deathless skyE
World worn and weary yet loth to dieE
