He was lyin' on his bunkA
In the hut behind the millB
Ravin' like a man wild drunkA
Never silent never stillB
'Best go in an' say Good bye 'C
Says old Blair 'He's got to die 'C
-
God I never want to seeD
Any face so wrung with painE
Nor to hear such blasphemyD
Ever in my life againF
White he was an' starey eyedG
With his hand pressed to his sideG
-
'Now he raves ' says Daddy PikeH
'He ain't wise to what he saysI
Never have I heard the likeH
All me wicked livin' days '-
'Raise him up a bit ' says BlairJ
'Put that pillow under thereJ
-
'Raise him There now easy ladK
Turn a little gently soL
You'll not feel it near so badK
Painin' Yes I know I knowL
Yes old man it's Blair your friendM
Boys he's very near the end '-
-
Soon a saner calmer lookN
Came in Murray's strainin' eyesO
Though his body heaved an' shookN
He held back his awful criesO
Till another wave of painE
Gripped him an' he shrieked againF
-
'Christ ' he called 'O Christ the painE
Boys you know I ain't a funk '-
Still he took the Name in vainE
Writhin' there upon his bunkA
'Do you call him ' says old BlairJ
Pointin' upward 'He is there '-
-
'Blair ' he gasps 'Do you believeP
Such as me Is there a chance '-
'Easy Murray Don't you grieveP
You ain't worth a single glanceQ
Save of pity from His eyeR
Laddie pray before you die '-
-
'God I'm frightened Blair ' says heD
'Boys you know I never whinedM
Where's the hope for one like meD
I ain't no hymn singin' kind '-
There was pleadin' in his glanceQ
'Blair ' says he 'is there a chance '-
-
-
Old Bob Blair reached for his handM
'Chance there is an' certaintyD
Try to think an' understandM
Nothin's There to fear ' says heD
'Him the Merciful the MildM
Think ye He would strike a childM
-
'Think ye that he put you hereS
Gave you labour gave you painE
So your end should be fearT
That you plead to Him in vainE
Nay dear laddie while you've breathU
Live in hope an' smile on death '-
-
With a hard hand woman kindM
He pushed back the sweaty hairJ
'Now then laddie ease your mindM
Pain will end for you out There '-
An' the smile on Blair's rough faceV
Was a blessin' an' a graceV
-
'God ' says Ben 'You are a friendM
Friend old man an' father tooM
Hold my hand right to the endM
They'll take notice There of youM
Good bye Jim an' Dusty DickW
Simon Pike I'm goin' quick '-
-
With his eyes shut tight he layX
His breath comin' in great sobsY
An' his poor lips seemed to prayX
As his hand held fast to Bob'sY
Now his sobs an' prayin' ceaseZ
Says old Blair 'God give him peaceZ
-
'Give him peace ' sighed old Bob BlairJ
As he rose beside the deadM
But I caught his wistful stareJ
An' the muttered words he saidM
'God ' he prayed 'if one there beD
Give such faith an' peace to me '-
