The Old White Horse Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED FGFGEHIH JKJKDLML NOPOQBQQB

In olden days the Old White HorseA
Stood brave against the skyB
And ne'er a teamster shaped his courseA
To pass the good inn byB
Far shone its lights o' winter nightsC
To beckon weary menD
By the long road where calm life flowedE
It loomed a landmark thenD
-
And many a good right yarn was spunF
Mid pewter pots agleamG
And mnay a friendship here begunF
Grew riper as the teamG
Drew down the road its precious loadE
Of merchandise or mailH
And faced the ills of long steep hillsI
To far off LilydaleH
-
The tap room rang to many a songJ
While patient teams stood thereK
And talk and laughter loud and longJ
Held nothing of despairK
For spoke they then those bearded menD
Of fortunes shining nearL
Spoke with a grand faith in their landM
A faith that laughed at fearL
-
Gone are the days and gone the waysN
Of easy calm contentO
Yet few supposed an epoch closedP
The day the old inn wentO
Now past brick homes trim and coldQ
The swift cars speeding byB
Shall see no beacon as of oldQ
Shall see no brave White Horse stand boldQ
Against a hopeful skyB
