An 'Ode to the Moon' did he inditeA
With his two and half soul powerB
'Twas the child of a starlit summer nightA
Begot by a gloomy hourB
-
-
And he vowed it was a work immenseC
And he quoted it a lotD
And be published it at his own expenseC
But the cold hard world said 'Rot '-
-
-
And he wrote him ringing verse of horseE
And the stockman and his pipeF
And the brooding bushland but of courseE
The world just murmured 'Tripe '-
-
-
So he sat him down for another flingG
And his time exposure mindH
Evolved a topical sort of thingG
Of a gay and hum'rous kindH
-
-
And he looked to see the world go wildI
And laugh until it criedJ
But the verse was poor and the humor mildI
And 'Bosh ' the tired world sighedJ
-
-
Then he oiled his weird ball bearing mindH
In a dull despairing moodK
And he wrote a thing of a cryptic kindH
Which nobody understoodL
-
-
'Twas an ode to the 'Umph' and the 'Thingmebob '-
With a lilt and a right good ringG
And hints of a smirk a snarl a sobM
And a murky murmuringG
-
-
Nay nobody understood a wordN
Nor strove to understandO
But few dared say it was absurdN
So most agreed 'twas 'Grand '-
-
-
Then be let his hair grow lank and longP
And an air intense he gotD
And ever he strove to nurse in songP
The cult of the 'Dunnowhat '-
-
-
And now he never writes in vainQ
But a famous man is heR
With a ten soul power and a chuck lathe brainQ
And an air of mysteryR
-
-
So of his lot take heed I wotD
If you aspire to fameS
Don't waste a tune on horse or moonT
But rave of WhatsitsnameS
It's tameS
But still it's WhatsitsnameS
