This ev'nin' I was sittin' wiv DoreenA
Peaceful an' 'appy wiv the day's work doneB
Watchin' be'ind the orchard's bonzer greenA
The flamin' wonder of the settin' sunB
-
Another day gone by another nightC
Creepin' along to douse Day's golden lightC
Another dawning when the night is goneD
To live an' love an' so life mooches onE
-
Times I 'ave thought when things was goin' crookF
When 'Ope turned nark an' Love forgot to smileG
Of somethin' I once seen in some old bookF
Where an ole sorehead arsts 'Is life worf w'ile '-
-
But in that stillness as the day grows dimH
An' I am sittin' there wiv 'er an' 'imH
My wife my son an' strength in me to striveI
I only know it's good to be aliveI
-
Yeh live yeh love yeh learn an' when yeh comeH
To square the ledger in some thortful hourJ
The everlastin' answer to the sumH
Must allus be 'Where's sense in gittin' sour '-
-
Fer when yeh've come to weigh the good an' badK
The gladness wiv the sadness you 'ave 'adK
Then 'im 'oo's faith in 'uman goodness failsL
Fergits to put 'is liver in the scalesL
-
Livin' an' loving learnin' day be dayK
Pausin' a minute in the barmy strifeM
To find that 'elpin' others on the wayK
Is gold coined fer your profit sich is lifeM
-
I've studied books wiv yearnings to improveN
To 'eave meself out of me lowly grooveN
An' 'ere is orl the change I ever gotK
''Ark at yer 'eart an' you kin learn the lot '-
-
I gives it in that wisdom o' the mindK
I wasn't built to play no lofty partK
Orl such is welkim to the joys they findK
I only know the wisdom o' the 'eartK
-
An' ever it 'as taught me day be dayK
The one same lesson in the same ole wayK
'Look fer yer profits in the 'earts o' friendsO
Fer 'atin' never paid no dividends '-
-
Life's wot yeh make it an' the bloke 'oo triesP
To grab the shinin' stars frum out the skiesP
Goes crook on life an' calls the world a cheatK
An' tramples on the daisies at 'is feetK
-
But when the moon comes creepin' o'er the hillQ
An' when the mopoke calls along the creekR
I takes me cup o' joy an' drinks me fillQ
An' arsts meself wot better could I seekR
-
An' ev'ry song I 'ear the thrushes singS
That everlastin' message seems to bringS
An' ev'ry wind that whispers in the treesT
Gives me the tip there ain't no joys like theseT
-
Livin' an' loving wand'rin' on yeh wayK
Reapin' the 'arvest of a kind deed doneB
An' watching in the sundown of yer dayK
Yerself again grown nobler in yer sonB
-
Knowin' that ev'ry coin o' kindness spentK
Bears interest in yer 'eart at cent per centK
Measurin' wisdom by the peace it bringsU
To simple minds that values simple thingsU
-
An' when I take a look along the wayK
That I 'ave trod it seems the man knows bestK
Who's met wiv slabs of sorrer in 'is dayK
When 'e is truly rich an' truly blestK
-
An' I am rich becos me eyes 'ave seenA
The lovelight in the eyes of my DoreenA
An' I am blest becos me feet 'ave trodK
A land 'oo's fields reflect the smile o' GodK
-
Livin' an' lovin' learnin' to fergiveN
The deeds an' words of some un'appy blokeV
Who's missed the bus so 'ave I come to liveN
An' take the 'ole mad world as 'arf a jokeV
-
Sittin' at ev'nin' in this sunset landK
Wiv 'Er in all the World to 'old me 'andK
A son to bear me name when I am goneD
Livin' an' lovin' so life mooches onE
