Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCCB DEDEFFFE GHIHJJJHI knew a poor remittance man | A |
A decent chap but funny | B |
In days when my ideas began | A |
To be controlled by money | B |
He wore a swank patrician air | C |
But oh his life was filled with care | C |
For he had seldom cash to spare | C |
His mien was far from sunny | B |
- | |
I fear I was a snobbish youth | D |
Who led a prig's existence | E |
I snubbed the chap to tell the truth | D |
And kept him at a distance | E |
His clothes well cut were often worn | F |
Threadbare Tho' he was gently born | F |
His friendship I refused with scorn | F |
Despite his soft insistence | E |
- | |
But now the whirligig of time | G |
Sees fit to elevate him | H |
While lo the money that was mine | I |
Is shrinking seriatim | H |
And faced by serious mishap | J |
While he reclines in Fortune's lap | J |
I'd like to find the dear old chap | J |
I'd want to cultivate him | H |
