The Lure Of Trees Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EEFFGGHH IIJJKKLL MMNNG OO

I honour all trees well but best of allA
I love those scarred old veterans proud and tallA
Gazing from eminences kingly wiseB
Across great sweeps of changing earth and skiesB
Gazing with seeming scorn upon the raceC
Of midgets who despoil this forest placeC
The restless race of men who with edged toolsD
With fire have come to serve the end of foolsD
-
Well these patricians know their own high worthE
Well know their task in serving Mother EarthE
Beckoning rain clouds sailing overheadF
That earth may drink and living things be fedF
Clutching with myriad roots the precious soilG
The sun or sudden flood else would despoilG
Bending to tempests spreading to the skyH
Remote untamed unconquered till they dieH
-
I know them in the rose light of the dawnI
Sharp etched upon the hill tops boldly drawnI
Against the light I know them at high noonJ
Their gleaming arms held up as for the boonJ
Of life they offer thanks know them at nightK
When out against the moon's enriching lightK
Some bold phalanger launches from their topsL
And like a falling leaf swings down and dropsL
-
And still come stupid men with axe and fireM
Scattering death to serve some brief desireM
'More than our lives are forfeit ' says the treeN
'For as we go so man's prosperityN
Goes with us till this once green gracious hillG
Shall thirst in vain when you have wrought your fill '-
I love I honour all those forest kingsO
They are such wise such proudly scornful thingsO
