| Gazing from eminences kingly wise | B |

| Of midgets who despoil this forest place | C |
| The restless race of men who with edged tools | D |
| With fire have come to serve the end of fools | D |

| Well these patricians know their own high worth | E |
| Well know their task in serving Mother Earth | E |
| Beckoning rain clouds sailing overhead | F |
| That earth may drink and living things be fed | F |
| Clutching with myriad roots the precious soil | G |
| The sun or sudden flood else would despoil | G |
| Bending to tempests spreading to the sky | H |
| Remote untamed unconquered till they die | H |

| I know them in the rose light of the dawn | I |
| Sharp etched upon the hill tops boldly drawn | I |
| Against the light I know them at high noon | J |
| Their gleaming arms held up as for the boon | J |
| Of life they offer thanks know them at night | K |
| When out against the moon's enriching light | K |
| Some bold phalanger launches from their tops | L |
| And like a falling leaf swings down and drops | L |

| And still come stupid men with axe and fire | M |
| Scattering death to serve some brief desire | M |
| 'More than our lives are forfeit ' says the tree | N |
| 'For as we go so man's prosperity | N |
| Goes with us till this once green gracious hill | G |
| Shall thirst in vain when you have wrought your fill ' | - |
| I love I honour all those forest kings | O |
| They are such wise such proudly scornful things | O |
