All fondly certain whose 'twould beA
And found a girl she did not knowB
-
A trusty maiden's modest faceC
All innocence and purityA
'What nun is this that fills my placeC
Alas he loves me not ' sighed sheA
-
'Nay daughter let no foolish fearsD
Your trust in his devotion mar '-
Her mother said 'Come dry your tearsE
That is the girl he thinks you are '-
-
All fondly curious with loveF
Half guessing what he would lay bareG
He rifled her heart's treasure troveH
And found a stranger's image thereG
-
'This is the man she loves ' said heA
And searching in the noble faceC
Read high resolve and constancyA
'This saint ' he cried 'usurps my place '-
-
'Nay ' spake his friend 'Your anger coolI
Gaze on that God like face once moreJ
Then be satisfied O foolI
That is the man she takes you for '-
