The Little People Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHAH EIE BJKJLMJM FNONAPQP RSASTFFF'Twas a long bush night and the old hut light | A |
Shone out thro' the open door | B |
To flood the knees of the great bush trees | C |
And the scrub that grew before | B |
And as I dreamed where the firelight gleamed | D |
And watched the long hours lag | E |
Came there to my shack Kilkenny Jack | F |
With his fiddle in its green baize bag | E |
- | |
So I bade him sit and rest a bit | G |
And we yarned of this and that | H |
Pipes well alight we watched the night | A |
As he on his old swag sat | H |
'Lonesome indade this life we lade ' | - |
Said he 'Why let time drag | E |
For me an' you ' And he stooped and drew | I |
His fiddle from its green baize bag | E |
- | |
Then the scrub before the old hut door | B |
Was people suddenly | J |
With elfin' folk who rose and spoke | K |
Strange mystic things to me | J |
Then into the glare from the bracken there | L |
The Little People crept | M |
And suddenly by fern and tree | J |
The fairies danced and leapt | M |
- | |
Kilkenny Jack he leant him back | F |
And his bow went to and fro | N |
And there outside the banshees cried | O |
In mournful tones and low | N |
And where the light stabbed thro' the night | A |
To cast dark shades about | P |
In many a place I saw the face | Q |
Of a leprechaun peep out | P |
- | |
Then the music stopped and Jack he dropped | R |
His fiddle and was done | S |
And into the night in sudden fright | A |
I saw the small folk run | S |
Then off he went his small form bent | T |
'Neath his old familiar swag | F |
Upon his back Kilkenny Jack | F |
With his fiddle in its green baize bag | F |
