We have heard the cheering brothersA
We have heard the martial pealB
We have seen the soldiers marchingC
And the glint of sun and steelB
We have heard the songs the shoutingC
But while forth the soldier roamsD
Who has heard the weeping brothersA
In the Little HomesD
-
We have seen the gay processionsE
And the careless laughing crowdsF
We have seen the banners wavingC
Out against the peaceful cloudsF
Yet while colors proudly flutterG
Over noble spires and domesD
Who has seen the mourning brothersA
In the Little HomesD
-
From the Little Homes that nestleH
Where the smiling fields sweep wideI
From the Little Homes that huddleH
In the city side by sideI
They have called the eager fightersA
Men who went with smiles and cheersJ
Pride of wives and pride of mothersA
Choking back the tearsK
-
Women of the little homesteadsL
Women of the city slumsM
They are waiting ever waitingC
And the sound of muffled drumsM
In some stricken Home is echoedN
Where grey Grief is guest to dayO
And to morrow Nay the othersA
Still must wait and prayO
-
What the Little Homes shall sufferG
What the Little Homes shall payO
Must be more than sturdy fightersA
More than women's grief to dayO
In the years that follow afterG
Be our battles won or lostP
In the Little Homes my brothersA
They shall pay the costQ
-
They shall pay the cost of gloryR
They shall pay the price of peaceS
Years and many long years afterG
All the sounds of battle ceaseS
When the sword is sheathed or brokenT
When the battle flag is furledQ
Still the Little Homes must sufferG
Over all the WorldQ
-
Have you seen the old grey mothersA
Smiling to the ringing cheersJ
Have you seen the young wives strivingC
Bravely to hold back the tearsK
Have you seen the young girl marchingC
By her soldier lover's sideQ
Have you seen our country's womenT
All aglow with prideQ
-
Then shall we think shame my brothersA
To give thanks upon our kneesU
That the land we love should hold themV
Wives and mothers such as theseU
Women who still hide their sorrowW
As their soldiers march awayO
Turning brave and steadfast facesX
To the light of dayO
-
Oh the Little Homes are CheerfulH
Little Homes that know no prideQ
But the pride of sacrificingC
Loved ones to the battle tideQ
They are many many brothersA
And their sacrifice is greatQ
Shrines are they and sacred placesX
Where the women waitQ
-
Aye the Little Homes are holyR
At the closing of the dayO
When young wives must face their sorrowW
When grey mothers kneel to prayO
Facing all alone dread visionsE
Of the land the soldier roamsD
Then God heed the sobbing brothersA
In the Little HomesD
