The Lips Of Ages Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EEDDDDFF GGHHIIFF

Down thro' the ages these same sticksA
Have played on man their knavish tricksA
Down thro' the ages these false lipsB
Have been as blessings or as whipsB
To scourge poor man to actions rashC
In waging wars or wasting cashC
Down thro' the years when Adam grievesD
Look to those painted lips of Eve'sD
-
-
Once modesty suggested stealthE
In simulating glowing healthE
But now alas no shame restrainsD
Toilets performed in trams in trainsD
At table for these candid daysD
Make nothing of the frank displaysD
Of carmine lard and lanolineF
To make plain Jane a beauteous queenF
-
-
Down thro' the ages pig and sheepG
Have tribute paid that men might weepG
Or laugh or love or go quite madH
Because of lips in grease paint cladH
Down thro' the years when heroes fallI
Look not for mortal wound at allI
Seek on his brow the thin red lineF
Of carmined lips Eve's fatal signF
