Once on a time a general whose name is handed downA
To the present generation as a name of high renownA
Once on a time this general I trust you understandB
This happened years and years ago and in a foreign landB
This general once stood before his army thinking hardC
And he talked about advancing but he didn't move a yardC
For to put the matter plainly though he knew his cause was rightD
And desired to be the leader yet he didn't want to fightD
-
-
He bravely talked for hours and hours of tactics and defenceE
In good sooth he was a leader of undoubted eloquenceF
Till his soldiers grew impatient for they spied afar the foeG
So they started marching forward and the leader had to goG
Though he begged for time to elocute they forced him to a walkH
Then they broke into a double and he hadn't breath to talkH
If his soldiers start to push him well that can a leader doI
Thus he led his army forward of necessity 'tis trueI
-
Oh they forced him to a runJ
And the firing of a gunJ
Gave him qualms about the business but he couldn't change his mindK
He'd have dearly loved to pauseL
And orate about The CauseM
But he had to keep responding to the pressure from behindK
Then he yelled a battle cryN
And he waved his sword on highN
But he mournfully reflected as he viewed the foemen's hordeO
Leadership may be all rightD
While the foe is out of sightD
But like the pen the silver tongue is safer than the swordO
-
-
The fight was won That general his heart swelled up with prideP
Delivered speeches eloquent to his victorious sideP
And the peroration hinted they should rest while they'd the chanceQ
But the army wanted more of it and urged him to advanceQ
'Twas here the general resigned to join another bandB
That didn't yearn to go and fight the battles of the landB
'Twas a calm reposeful army and that leader suited wellR
For it let him talk of fighting while it sat and took a spellR
-
-
He was leader of the tiredS
And he never was requiredS
To go ranging o'er the country to attack a savage foeG
And whene'er he thought it bestT
To sit down and take a restT
Well it's rude to push a leader when he doesn't want to goG
And if by some mischanceQ
He should mention an advanceQ
They would let him talk about it and applaud him very hardC
They would hail him as the manU
Who by right was in the vanU
But they'd grab him by the coat tails if he sought to move a yardC
-
-
Give attention now my masters to this general's careerV
He was affable and eloquent but let me mention hereW
This happened very long since twenty thousand years or soQ
For now we know a leader leads before he's forced to goQ
But if perchance at any time a leader you should findK
Who objects to moving onward till he gets a push behindK
Far better shift him from the front his place is never hereW
And let him join the other crowd the Army of the RearV
-
-
Let us have a moving army let its leader be a manU
Who doesn't need a shove behind to keep him in the vanU
And if he halts to elocute let's shift him off the trackX
And put him 'mid the baggage carts and lumber at the backX
There to seek a reputation with the busted and the bushedK
For no man may seek for Honor who insists on being pushedK
And he who seeks to lead must keep ahead a yard or soQ
For it's rude to push a leader when he doesn't want to goQ
-
For a leader of the kindK
Who requires a kick behindK
Isn't any sort of leader when you come to think of itK
And the generals we needK
Are the fellows who CAN leadK
The men who know the track to go and tackle it with gritK
Wherefore when you hear the talkH
Of these fellows who would baulkH
While they flood the land with eloquence till mentally you're bushedK
Just remember words and airY
Seldom lead to anywhereY
And reflect upon the story of the leader that was pushedK
