He sat upon a fallen logA
And heaved a long deep sighB
His gnarled hand fondling his old dogA
As his gaze went to the skyB
There goes another pane said heC
A soarin' roarin' pestD
They robs a man of privacyC
An' motor cars of restD
-
Sundownin' ain't the game ut wasE
Since men have took to wingsF
An' life grows narrer jist becauseG
Of plans an' cars an' thingsF
For the planes have pinched me privit skiesH
An' the cars have grabbed me earthI
An' all the news by wireless fliesH
So what's sundownin' worthI
-
Time was when I could sit me downJ
Where man had left no signK
An' earth an' sky for miles aroun'K
For that one hour was mineK
And I could sit an' think me thortsH
An' watch the sun go westD
Without no crazy ingine's snortsH
To break into me restD
-
And as the afternoon grew lateL
I'd seek the haunts of menK
An' at some lonely homestead gateL
I'd have sure welcome thenK
An' tucker bags were gladly filledM
And rest found for my backN
In change for bits of news I spilledM
And gossip of the trackN
-
But now that wireless spreads its liesH
From this and other landsH
They look on me with hard cold eyesH
An' give with grudgin' handsH
It's them that has to give me newsH
And when I seek some wideO
Once silent scene planes spoil me viewsH
An' cars honk me asideO
-
He sat upon a fallen logA
And heaved a long deep sighB
We're agein' me an' my ole dogA
An' old things have to dieB
Sundownin's dead men's minds an' waysH
Is changin' with a jerkP
Seems like I'll have to end me daysH
Travellin' in search of workP
